gaian mind did I think like 1200 this year... something like that. I did really enjoy having like 300 people on the dance floor most of the time, it really made trance dancing a riot instead of kind of feeling obligated to represent. I know in the midwest where the numbers are smaller the party can lose alot of momentum if the dancefloor just clears out, but it happens because there isnt enough changing of the gaurd, where as at larger parties people are constantly coming and going so theres more people on the dancefloor at all times even if they are completely different everytime you roll up to it.
that said, I like the intimacy and bonding of smaller parties.. I have really bonded with my psy family at smaller events while the larger events I've been to have seemed more like free for alls where I didnt have time to get to know the new people as much since I was running into new people constantly. but even then I met new people, there is just no way to know everyone and I like to try and meet as many people as I can at events.
I've yet to hit boom so I'm afraid I cant really throw in input on a party much bigger than 1000. if we didnt have the damn rave act, we would definately be throwing massives somewhere stateside I'm sure

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't the massives really start to water things down a bit from a party standpoint? I mean this music is underground in the US because it isn't for the mainstream masses; even those who do like EDM and the other types of trance that aren't psy. There might be a crap ton of energy from the pure amount of numbers, but I can very easily see the vibe being destroyed by the sheer %'s of people who don't uphold basic ideals/morals. In essence it would be killing the scene through the growth of it I would presume.
As I said, I could be wrong in this thought process, even though it could be entirely different depending on where you are geographically, IE venue availability. By that I mean having choices of venues that are suitable for larger sized events. Also having enough of them to choose from if your attempt at a massive blows up in your face and you lose the venue.

I would say more accurately that it is underground because promoters have chosen to keep it that way either by a.concious decision, b.having their head too far in the clouds to connect with anyone outside of said clouds, or c.just plain being lazy.
I absolutely hear what Vaxination is saying. From a promoters perspective, the worst feeling is to put lots of hard work, effort, time, and money into an event and then see an empty dancefloor. From a dancers perspective it's pretty uncomfortable. From a newbie spectators perspective it's boring and lame. And from the universes perspective, it's a waste of electricity... |

After seeing tens of thousands of people at Boom last summer I thought it was cool, but far too overwhelming compared to the small, extended family-size parties that we have sometimes here in Cali. I'd say I prefer 100-300 people. With the expectation for everybody to be active, on the dancefloor and staying for most of the party's duration (ravers around here usually escape the sun at 5-6am).

I find that you need at least 300 kids to make hog ridge not feel empty, but our outdoor venue is pretty large. I've seen over 600 kids, and its alot of fun, though honestly, it gets a little unmanageable without a dedicated crew to keep everything going smoothly. I think 300 kids is about perfect for my area for now, once you get past that, you get alot of complete randoms who dont care about anything but getting fucked up on drugs rolling in. Not that I expect the crowd to be seasoned trancers, because then I'd have about 50-100 people around here, but with a crowd around 300, I see the intention rubbing off on the other 200 kids and suddenly the scene is growing in the right ways. I guess at a super large party, its hard to get the message across with all the natural madness that many people in one spot can create.
I guess I like to foster community with the events more than just "throw some rave in the woods". For some of us.. its our religion.. I know I feel like I'm going to church when I'm out at our venue.

I still use the word 'kids' to refer to everyone regardless of age. I always have. It's not meant to be negative. We're all kids. I think he's doing the same thing. It's all good.
My thoughts on size:
It's kind of relative for me. A festival with 2500 people can seem as small and intimate as a 200 person party depending on location and duration. If it's going on for a week and the location is huge then you never get any adverse crowding and you end up with pockets of intimacy. Given enough time you get to know everyone just like at a smaller, 200 person overnight party.
By the same token a 200 person party can seem too big if the location is cramped and the duration is short.
Overall, I prefer smaller parties (50-300 people) and smaller festivals (500-2500 people). Bigger fests with 5-10K people can work fine if the location and organization are good but over 5K is when those factors really start to matter. Massives in the 20-50K range can also work fine if things are organized enough and the crowd is respectful of each other. I don't seek out massives like I once did but there's an undeniable energy that can be amazing when you get that many people together. Definitely worth experiencing and I'm not talking about concerts. There's a different experience with a multi-day festival. You need to be camping and in the environment for many days to really de-contextualize everyday reality (that's when it all really starts gelling).
My patience for dealing with all the things that come along with larger crowds has declined as I've gotten older. It's all a matter of "net gain" for me now. ie: how much energy do I have to put into this to get a good feeling that it was all worth it and come out with a positive experience. Lines, crowding, no room to move or dance, trash buildup, disgusting toilets, ignorant yahoos, etc. all chip away at that net gain and statistically increase with the attendance numbers. |

i agree with jds, all good valid points. thats pretty much where my point of view is too. smaller fests and parties are my thing but I give select larger ones a chance due to still loving the random chaos of larger events.
and forgive my generic use of kids. not meant to be insulting. like jds said, we're all kids.. at least I consider myself one.. I go and dance for days at a time, got to be a child at heart to love that right?

small parties more often, big ones a few times a year. What my wallet and my brain can afford.
