I think there should be new categories for performances instead of just "live", "DJ" or "fake set". Having more categories might make it easier for artists and promotors to both promote and be honest at the same time. I actually dont care much what kind of set it is, I just want to hear music by the artists Im coming to hear and I want it to sound good, and ideally it should be responsive to the crowd.

So here are my ideas for categories.

DJ set- DJ set of whatever music they want

Label DJ set- Showcase of their labels music, with unreleased tracks from other artists on the label and stuff like that.

Producer set- DJ set of only the artists own material, preferably with remixes prepared specially for the occasion, and most importantly it needs to weave the artists work together in a unique way that I cant get by just listening to their CD.

Artist Presentation- The artist prepares a full length set before the performance, and then comes in and presses "play" and dances around and enjoys the party.

Live set- Artist plays pre-prepared files but directly controls at least one part of the music (playing synths, keeping a beat with a drum pad, modulating filters etc)

Full live set- A large portion of the music is controlled moment to moment. Probably requires multiple people or a human octopus.

Full live set with performers- Live instruments, people singing, people on samplers, and synths, the works. Medicine Drum used to do a great one.

the part before and after what you quoted.
To rephrase it for you:
I see a lot of argument over what is "live", so I made up some descriptors for different kinds of sets that could be used to give people a better idea of what kinds of performance to expect.

I agree with your new terminology, the problem is that it would be very dificult for promoters and general public to understand it.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

How bout the live acts just do their job, and the djs do theirs?

Even if this does end up being the case, where we need different descriptions of whatever act, you really think people are going to be more honest about it?

Since Dali can hit a set of trigger pads that don't do anything, does that make her set more of a "performance"?

          You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I think most people understand that when you say "Live PA" a lot of the time what you really mean is "DJ Set of stuff you produced"

Seriously, the punters are more interested in partying and not really about what the dude on the stage is doing as long as the music flows and it is quality.

If I see a bunch of lives and dj's that I know the music they will play will be good, what they do on stage doesn't matter at all, I'll mostly likely be to wasted and smiling to even notice if they are just snorting crack out of some hoe's butt crack

I go for the vibe, not for the knob fiddling
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

If this was true for everyone then spacebar artists wouldn't waste their time pretending to do stuff on stage. We're up there to give the audience what they want, and a lot of them want to see their favourite artists actually performing their music. Hence the pretence of a li(v)e set.
