Do you have an amp?
If you don't, you'll probably want some sort of amp for it.
I don't know what you're looking to spend, but Line6 makes a Bass Pod (which be used for guitar too) which is outstanding. I think they make a guitar version too. ~$400US and comes with a bunch of effects (reverb/delay/distortion/etc) and lets you model different types of cabinets - all in one kidney-bean shaped device.
Then you just run the outputs of that into your soundcard.

yes i agree that Line 6 guitar pod is the best way to do it if you dont have quality amps and mics. if dont have that amount of money, i would suggest ik multimedia amplitube vst ..its fun sofware emulation of real amps and fx.. works well.
theres also native instruments guitar rig but havent tried that out yet.
rock on.. |

"guitar rig" is a great plugin to take care of guitar samples.U can record your guitar direct to your soundcard but I usually record guitar thru a PreAmp - an amplifier with line out. |

The best way off-course is to mic. the amplifier with dedicated microphones...but...
You could also use a di-box (makes your input level higher) ,which is fairly in-expensive...and i suggest 2 use somekind off distortion or wah wah or chorus/flanger or all together...depending of the sound u're after...
here are some sound examples...

Good Luck... |

What ???
mics ? i dont think so... u will get a looooooooooooooooooot of hiss
mics are for acoustics (true nylon string acoustics, not semi-acoustic guitars)
Best way to do it....
Plug your guitar to your effects(distortion, wah, effect rack, whatever)
Then get the last output from the chain of effects and plug it in the mic input or any recording input of your soundcard...
open soundforge/wavelab.
REC.
thats it...
i guess thats what u are looking for....
unless u have a mega giga big master studio then there are other ways/details.
Or u are up to buying expansive microphones and u gotta have a really good acoustic treatment in your studio/homestudio and also need a killer guitar amp.(as u see to record with mics u will need a lotta shit)
though i play guitar for 10 years, i might be wrong, but seems the best imo....
cheers

Eh...Eduardo...i think any respectable producer/recording engineer....will go for the miking solution first...
I think that's how it's still done in most of rock'n'roll recordings...

guitar amp i would mic with a Shure SM57 and try to screen the amp up.
The more common way in a small studio setup i would DI it driectly into a compressor or dircet into the rig your using.
Enjoy!

Yeah man.... i might have not been clear with my answer sorry.
i didnt disagree with anybody saying mics are not a good/best way.
i said that if u are working at homestudio, and not on a big studio with professional equipment u should use soundforge/wavelab.
Belive me... its better...
Cause if u do a cheap mic, with cheap amp, and cheap acoustics u are doomed.
I dont think any "respectable engeneer" would come to isratrance asking how he should mic a guitar though.

but respectable artists would?
All depends on what kind of sound you want
Its as simple as Connect the output from your guitar Straight into your soundcard.
Then can add effects like Amplitutde etc..
or If you have a good amp with effects and you want that amp sound can record on MIC. or just take the output of amp to the soundcard In.
IN recording depending on if you recording a part in a song or just PLAIN guitar
You can do it in Any sequencer like Cubase or Logic. AS well as WaveLab or SoundForge |
