Okay, here is one of my recipes of cooking the rhythm section. For one rhythmical image (more may be needed while composing a track) you will need: 2 closed hi hats (CH), 1 open hi hat (OH), 2 tribal percussion loops (PL), snare or clap, shaker sounds, other sounds to taste.
Now, take 2 CHs and make them play 1/16, with different rhythmic accents (achieve this with volume or velocity). Those should sound diverse and be panned left and right strong. Then add OH, it should play 1/4 offbeat, I would put in the very middle of panorama.
2 PLs should be placed left and right, so they don’t mess with each other. If you don’t record you own loops and use samples then it is probably would be good idea to know the origin of the instruments in the loop. I think it’s nice to stick to the territory where the instruments come from, and if you use, for example, djembe which is Arabian instrument, its good to take its pair also from Arabian instruments, and leave tabla (which is Indian) for another track.
Next, the snare comes. I put it in the middle, and it plays together with each second kick (1/2). Actually the snare’s role may play huge variety of sounds. For psy trance productions I like to apply a bit of flange to the sound.
Shaker loop and other sounds may be placed where necessary to achieve even groovier rhythm.
After the composition of the image should probably add a bit of drum room reverberation, to place sounds further or closer, so they create room. In most pop and rock production there are general rules of arranging and placing percussion, which sound engineers stick to, but in psy trance there are no rules, the sounds vary so much and their placing is up to producer’s skills and taste. You may settle PLs a bit further then snare. Or place CH on different distances from the listener. Or vice versa. Or just add a bit of room just to make percussion not so dry. Use AUX channel for reverb, that will save your time and processing power.
Last, use the rule: what sounds good is good. It helps. And stop wasting time reading the forum and go experiment.
