You can make a track just using the plugs that ableton has, operator is my favourite, for fx i suggest external like waves plugins, and for external instruments Zebra, sylenth, massive, olga, albino, there are way too many but at the end i think its better to master a few that use a lot of plugs that you dont know half of its features.
Hope it helps! Good look |

Good choice with Ableton.
IMO for psytrance you need to have a wide palette of sounds, but the common misconception is that you need a large amount of synths in order to have that palette when in reality you just need to know the synths that you do have really well.
However, no matter how well you know Sylenth, it's not a capable FM synth.
I'm not sure how experienced of a producer you are, but if you're fairly new I would stick with Sylenth and the built in Ableton effects (and Operator!) and just learn the basics. If you're already fairly well versed in the basics, I would highly suggest getting a synth that lets you change the signal path around instead of being stuck with the standard substractive synthesis layout.
IMO you can't beat Zebra for that. Also, for FX packages I really like the Uhbik package from U-he, and the D16 Silverline plugins.
I also can't say enough good things about Omnisphere.
You might find some stuff here that will help you:

I would vote for zebra and massive. Multistage EGs are essential for modern psy imho. |

Id say the best straight-FM synth that Ive used has to be NI FM8, hands down. You can get some good sound just by tweaking fx and the master controls, without even getting your feet wet in the advanced screen futzing with operators, but it really shows its beast-face when true FM synthesis techniques are applied. Very easy to get bad sound, and very easy to kill a good patch, but the first one you make from scratch makes you feel like you aced the exam you thought for sure was FUBAR.
Ableton's Operator I think of as My First FM Synth, its a good intro to the synthesis, very easy to make neat sound, very straightforward, but also has stuff under the hood for more advanced wonkage.
Straight-FM sounds are great for burbling, liquid sounds, morning-style rez-sweeps, and that general metal-crystalline sound that I guarante you've heard everywhere.
FM controls in other hybrid synths are fun too, a great one for starters is Synth1, Ive used it for years and years for FM-and-___ sounds, Sylenth1 to me is like Synth1's more advanced, current-tech-savvy teenage son, Dad still has a few years left in him but some things he just doesn't understand . Synth1 is a great learner's synth, though, if you can use it well, you can pretty much use anything, or at least have a good idea where to start.
