Best VST Sampler...? or how do you use samples nowadays.

I tried to search the forum for discussion about this but were not successful.

I would like to use some classical instruments in my music (bagpipe, flutes, pianos, guitaras, etc..). I have some sample collections in AKAI format that contain such samples. I think I have also some collections in Halion format (or I used many years ago the Halion import/convert feature to do them). I used Steinberg Halion but I have never really liked it.

As time has changed, what would be nowadays good solutions for using samples. I am trying to search for something high sound quality (including filters) but with straightforward and intuitive user interface. With the abudance of synths, I think it is quite suprising how difficult I found it to find such products, so are people using nowadays only the built-in features in sequencers..? I was practically able to find only the following "famous" alternatives: Steinberg Halion, NI Kontakt and DiscoDSP Highlife.

I am composing with Ableton Live so I suppose there is some sampler features there. Are these good? Although I prefer to learn to use a platform indepent solution so that it is easy for me to switch into Cubase, etc.. if needed.

So what can you recommend and/or how do you use samples when you do music. I suppose you could put them directly to audio tracks, but of course this is too complicated (I think) if you want to do chords, melodies or use sampler filters or other similar features (pitch envelope, etc..)

Like Zork said, Halion is good.
Kontakt..

Although Ableton Live Simpler and Sampler are enough to me.
Sometimes I also use SFZ+ which is free now.
And Simple Sampler.
It loads sounds as they are with no ADSR or extra settings. Then I insert external filters!

Halion 4 isn't out yet, but it has been anounced that it will come some day.

I say use Kontakt, it can convert from AKAI format.           ~Airyck~

A little of topic but a few samplers questions.
I'm really lost about how to use a sampler, do you put
several samples in one channel? and if so how do you
link different fx to each sample?
Thanx......           Now say the magic words: Bleep Bleep Deep Deep Wham.....

Basicly you can have for each sample individual controls like Envelopes, Filter, inerts, Pan etc.

On Kontakt you have first to "Move each Zone to its own Group " first so that you have individual controls.

You copuld also use Battery which instantly allows individual controls but less posibilities like no flexible envelope etc ...           http://facebook.com/ansolas

Been using Battery for a while but like u said, I had
some limitations whit it and couldnt realy realize how
to work with other samplers. Actually I didn't know exactly
which sampler to use. Guess ill dig into Kontakt and find my
way.

My experience is very limited, so take this advice with a grain of salt.

The ableton samplers are really high powered in my opinion...creating new custom instruments with the sampler+synths with effect chains after them (via instrument rack) is extremely kick-ass. At first I was just using the Simpler and wasn't particularly impressed (no shit, huh?), but I'm still at a loss to use 10% of the stuff you can do in Sampler.

Try this:

load new instrument rack, put the ableton sampler in there, load your sample of choice in..then stack effects as you desire after that sampler, then load another sampler in (or operator/analogue/vst of choice), pop in a different sample...well this is only cool if the sounds actually meld well together, but this way you can write new MIDI clip sequences using your samples as the 'instrument'

Before I was shown how to use that I was just cutting/re-arranging/slowing down/reversing the samples in waveform in an audio track...seems the instrument rack approach makes it quicker to experiment and see what you want

the macro-knobs are so ridiculous too, you can map pretty much anything (or a bunch of things to one knob) and then automate that with ableton's awesome interface...I can play with those red lines for hours...

for instance, an instrument rack I just created: arpeggiator, Delay Lama vst (makes monk chanting noises), auto filter, filter delay, flanger,

with the arp rate, vowel/headsize of the lama, frequency of the filter cherry picked as macros....automated those and it sounds pretty awesome...
