Joao it is your fault, Pc Musician and SOS deals with all kinds of music and it's equipment not only mics or preamps. It deals more with all hardware and software available on market. It deals with different techniques for mastering, mixing and balancing.

these magazines are cool, but i've stopped buying since most of the things they say are better explained in books dedicated to the subject.
Why buy 12 magazines in a month if you can buy a book by paul white (sos contributor) on a specific topic you target?
also i stopped buying shit so i don't care about reviews...

Don't forget we are at the same music scene as singers, guitarists and drummers. They use same tools for same things just they sound was more pro because they read and/or mastered by person who read and know.

you're generalizing... you maybe didn't spend so much time as i do listening to demos from other styles of music... i would their mixes are often worst but i would be generalizing too.
and again i don't care about things such as mic preamps or 5000€+ reverb units or the lastest pro-tools gadget
but, i've read about the first virus on SOS before it had any street cred, or about the JP8000 and Nord 1 before they became usual pieces in everyone studio or to know that most jungle was (is?) just the amen beat an octave up: for stuff like that magazines are cool!

Since i'm member here, the only person who has an idea of what's goin on at semi pro level is Colin (OOOD). Rest just repeat things of others or talk bullshite.

you're not right... many others spare precious knowledge... i'm shure colin knows a lot, but many others here know as much as him too

just to thow more wood into the fire
learning books only wont make anyone an engineer in any subject... even in mixing/mastering
experimenting and making errors is the way to go, you just need to be able to spot your errors (or have someone to do that for you) nad learn from them

i think this topic was started for just a simple question... which tools are the best?
now it ended up as a discussion about who is wrong or right!!! it would be usefull if you write about which tools you like and maybe why they are good, for the people who try to find out what they could use!
back to the root... |

I really like class-A hardware... for that analogue touch. i don't have a big budget so i use the focusrite mixmaster, not the greatest of em all, but sounds really sweet... Sweeter then the plugins i used to use. Class-A hardware (or a very good emulation thereof) is the way to go for mastering according to me. Plugins are great too though... much easier to use and more flexible. |
