For fm sounds i would definately use a Nord or maybe a Virus. Until now i haven't heard any softsynth do it quite as convincing as hardware synths. Although i must say that z3ta+ comes pretty close.

I think aliased oscilators are much better for harsh sounding FM. Nord lead 2, nord modular 1, older waldorf synths.
Yamaha TG77 would probly be a killer synth to get too if you want something on the cheap hardware wise for this. I'm suprised more people don't use the TG77, its a monster FM synth with filters but you don't need a phd like the fs1r. |

zebra 2 at the moment
and yes komplexor for sure, A1 is still very much worth a look in the FM stakes methinks.
basically, as long as it is proper FM, as opposed to PM (ie DX 7) you can get the classic analog synth FM sound - and then its all about the filter - and waldorf ones are pretty damn characterful.

Are DX7's still worthwhile? I have a DX27 (not exactly the same I know)
I found it in the attic.. No really, it was just there.
Never used it. Looks impossible to program.

Am I tripping or did we just loose some posts in this thread?

the dx sound is incredible, and has loads of life in it yet! But its less harsh then what you typically get out of 'true' frequency modulation. It modulates, not through modulating the pitch of the oscilator, but by modulating the phase of the oscilator, which in practice is just that little bit less harsh.
the FM7 was one of the first soft synths I purchased, and its still well up on my list of favourite synths - and with feedback it can still be pretty harsh indeed, just not in quite the same way
I think all posts are present and correct undertow.

It must be me then.
The DX7 isn't bad but it is noisy compared to modern synths (let alone VSTs)
