@ Klippel
In my youth I used to work for a fancy HIFI retailer demonstrating some quite tasty bits of kit including B&W among others. Many of the speaker manufacturers offered demo CDs. They were absolutely brilliant recordings. This thread made think about e-mailing some of them to get some as I didn't take any with me when I left the company.
@ Saf
Hi again, I appreciate what your saying about making tracks sound good on as many systems as possible. I'm not sure its as simple as that though. I personally like to consider the end user when making such decisions, especially with more niche genres. If your looking to break into the top 40 (UK as example) then I would consider radio play and mono compatibility. If it was an audiophile classical recording then I wouldn't personally comprise HIFI reproduction for a radio friendliness. I would still perhaps check mono playback but wouldn't let it dictate the mix. I found that the test CDs still sounded good on a budget HIFI. But maybe wouldn't work for radio in a car as well. But thats a guess as I never tried them in a car.

I've got some hi-fi demo compilations. I used to go to a lot of hifi exhibitions and they gave out a few CDs sometimes.
They really do pick the best produced and mastered songs there are.. usually classical, or instrumental/vocal songs, but they always sound so classy. No idea about how they translate to anything other than high-end stereo systems though.
Back to the best produced pop songs...
Can I suggest that everyone -at least- listen to the new LOVE album by the Beatles. George Martin & son went back to the original analogue tapes from 40 years ago and remixed it. The whole album is amazing, the new Elanor Rigby is stunning, the violins just hang in the air! Dunno whether its true or not but apparently they used Waves software to mix it.
Don't care what anyone says.. Beatles.. amazing. |

@Tomos
I've not yet got round to buying a Beatles album (yet). I guess I have this image of them be hippie revolutionaries. I like that, but Paul has loads of money, more than his fare share, can't he give away his new music? Wouldn't that be the ultimate gesture? Anyway I can really relate to your experiences of HIFI demo CDs so I'm going to try and push my own personal bias aside and get the new LOVE album and try and give it a fair shot. It can be a real treat to listen to good music thats well produced on a quality HIFI.

Psytracked . You won't be disappointed. It has a very psychedelic edge to it (its from the heady 60's after all)
Actually Paul has been giving away some of his music recently, there was a Starbucks coffee promotion, buy some coffee, get a CD I think..
Anyway, the reason for the Love album is because it is the soundtrack to the new Cirque du Soleil show, which I'm going to see next year in Las Vegas
So its more a soundtrack that just-another mix album. But it really shines however you you look at it. |

I tried to buy the album at HMV but they wouldn't give me a student discount even they I had photo ID and all my enrolement papers. What is the world coming to?
Giving away music with Starbucks? isn't that like sleeping with the enemy? The way I look at it: The Beatles didn't have the opportunity to free themselves from the record industry as they relied on the manufacture of the records. So what ever message they had, had to be bought. Now with the internet you can distribute globally with out the need of a record company for the manufacturing. So if one wants to spread the message of love, peace and unity to the world you can and you don't have to add the condition, only if you line my pockets. Which kinda dilutes the message and makes it feel some what fake and marketed. I'm willing to brush aside my skepticism for the Beatles but not for McCartney now. I've noticed some Psy artists allow you to download their music and choose a donation. This could be the way forward. We could break free of the Record industry and its power hungry greed and dictatorship. But only if we choose to put the love of music before money and personal gain.
The hypocrisies leave me feeling disillusioned. Where are the true revolutionaries?

im not paying for the peace & love & unity mambo jambo
im paying for quality music.
and i do belive your point of view is kinda wrong...
1st theres nothing wrong with giving away music on starbucks....who`s enemy are they anyway??? not mine, thats for sure...
2nd...this isnt a Paul Mcartney album, this is a Cirque du Soleil soundtrack album, so why blame Paul?
3rd....please...PLEASE dont compare Psy artists with Beatles and Paul mcartney, they are 2 totally different things, like David and Golia (?)
4th...If you call it Hypocrisy, you will be a hypocrite sooner or later, no one survives in todays world without money, how will you?

Hi again Brasirc
I was also trying to pay for quailty music and still will unless there is a major revolution in my time. I appreciate it's not a Paul McCartney album. My point of view is my my point of view, nothing more or nothing less. We are all bias so I don't think we can say for absolute certainty that a view point is completely wrong. As for Starbucks..lol..We could get into a discussion about their appalling employment conditions and dirty business practices. Ill just leave it at "I don't go there for coffee anymore".
Your 4th point is the one that interests me the most. I have asked myself this question over and over again. How can I drop out of the game yet still put food on my plate? I have come to some collusions for myself. When I finish uni I plan to work as a freelance mix engineer/producer for smaller bands who don't wish to beg and grovel to the record industry or perhaps just wish to have something more professional for internet distribution. There is now a market for this in the UK. I also will try to work in Audio Post Production. This will hopefully put food on my plate. I don't need a Ferrari or a Mansion. As for my own music, when and if it ever matures, I will give it away free or perhaps at cost price. For me this a very personal issue. I write music for me, not for a market. I just hope if I have any success that it dossn't turn me into a greedy person with an inflated ego.
Time will tell she always does.

good enough...
but you cant expect the band that are requiring your service to dont expect revenue from their work....or else they simply wouldnt have any money to require your services in first place... so you fall in the same trap...
truth is...as long as we live under a capitalist influence, no point in calling one hypocrite for earning his money, by doing so, we are all hypocrites =)
you can always just move to cuba tho...
edit: and i dont go to starbucks either...but its cause of the coffee itself =/

@ brasic
Strarbucks coffee is shit. Fortunetly I have tasted much better since.
Yes we do live under huge capitalist influence now but history tells us that this may not always be the way. I personally am not a fan of the music industry and how such a small number of people yield so much control over what we get to listen too. I see them as nothing more than bankers. I think maybe we can say that we are at an interesting point in time with the growth of the internet, connection speeds and compression technologies. As the result of internet file sharing consumers have demonstrated a desire for greater musical choice and thus given birth to "long tail" marketing and retail strategies like Amazon and the itunes store. Ultimately it could become possible to bypass the record companies altogether. The opportunity is there for a new business model which doesn't have to line the pockets of so few. I don't expect capitalism to be replaced in my life time. But I do feel that we can find a fairer way. If we want to.
I respect your views and the arguments you have put forward. I think we all benefit from having our perceptions questioned and debated.
@mk47
Was you talking of electro pop?
