which is the best music player for Mac? I tunes is THE shittiest player ever.. I think it does some thing with the sound.. it is not real representation.. Also quick time does some thing with the sounds.. So I always end up loading tracks in my DAW to listen.

Please share some good music player which has true representation of RMS and peak.

If you search for the best playback quality, try jriver media center.

I tried quite a few and this piece of software impressed me the most. The GUI and overall handling isn't really my thing, but still it has the best sound of all programs I tried (that is using asio driver).

Furthermore you have a great amount of possibilities regarding configuration...

Heard good things about Amarra and Fidelia:

Maybe download some demos and try a few out? I'm PC so have used Foobar2000 for the last ten years.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

there's nothing wrong with the playback quality of both iTunes and Quicktime.

the problem must lie somewhere else. my guess is that you have different settings for the system playback and your daw. so, check your audio interface's options; head to apps>utilities>audio midi and choose appropriate bit depth and sample rate for the system.

http://bobbyowsinski.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/latest-on-mastered-for-itunes.html

Also found that they reduce RMS to -15 .. mostly trance track is mastered around -10dB rms..

Apple wants every thing it's way..

So I want a play back engine.. which keeps the RMS as it is..           https://soundcloud.com/aseem-2

Both Windows and Mac OS will perform all sorts of nasty shit on your audio if you are not very careful. You need to setup the OS, player, driver, and DAW to the same to make sure you are getting just the pure sound without any crappy real time SRC or dithering etc. A good quality player often makes this easier than those built in to the OS due to working more closely with the raw audio streams.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

^this is true

iTunes has got an equalizer that can alter the sound. it's also got some kind of "sound check" algorithm that's supposed to level the volumes (loudness) on a play list or even radio. all it takes is to switch those options off and then it's ok. I didn't have to do anything to quicktime, though, and it performs the same way the "preview" on finder - that's just as straightforward as it gets in terms of direct playback on the mac. so if you turn it off, it won't happen and it's all fine!

I trust you're comparing the exact same file within cubase and itunes, so it must be safe to exclude that you've done something wrong with the exporting options, the audio file format, etc, right?

then, have you checked if you're not altering the sound in cubase? silly question, I know, but you really need to check if there's something going on that you might have overlooked. because the reality is that if you turn all those crappy algorithms off, it should sound as transparent as it gets, "working more closely with the raw audio streams", like babaluma said; and quicktime should do this readily by default - that's what's puzzling me the most tbh.

I can't perform the test, as I don't have Cubase m8...

but can do this maybe tomorrow with Logic.

what about the preview in Mac OS? in the window? how does it compare with iTunes? that should be transparent, just the raw playback of the file, so it's a good indicator for something unusual apps are doing to your sound.

just thought of it, have you checked this with "digicheck"?

i find 90% of the audio player apps for a mac are total bullshit & just another take on itunes..

why does every audio player try to include a library and all this filler when they havent got near a decent app yet? incredible.

for PC on the other hand there is always foobar, as Babaluma stated. its really amazingly lightweight, customizable & highly functional.

everything is gonna require setting up though.

heres a list of of foobar "replacements" for mac

http://www.techisky.com/tips/foobar-for-mac.html

itunes still seems to be the best. i wouldnt worry about it converting lossless formats to apple-lossless, if you use a mac you may aswell stick to .aiff but if it starts re-encoding compressed audio for me id be really pissed off.

couldn't ear a difference from Logic, iTunes or Quicktime.

performed a little test with both mp3 (16 bit 44.1Khz, 320KB/s); wave (24 bit 44.1Khz & 48Khz; 16 bit 44.1Khz). running on Mac OS 10.6.8 (snow leopard latest update), with updated versions of everything for this system. all seems to be ok.
