I'm trying to make a synth in Reason for a Goa tack but I'm not sure what patch and effects to use. Any suggestions?

well not knowing anything about reason, all i can say is that you just have to make your own sounds.
there is no program that makes nice stuff out of the box everything requires a lot of work and experimentation.it is through this work that you gain an intimate knowledge of music making and production. making your own sound is your chance to make something unique something that perhaps no one else had thought to do, there really are no rules. i´m not saying use only your own material as patches or samples or a loop can sometimes provide the inspiration and feeling of a track too. but for the most part one should try and carve out a niche for him or herself, there is simply too much similar sounding stuff out there.

nicely stated by monno... i agree
but just to help a little...
try to imagine the sound you want... find the most similar patch to this sound... and then try your best to alter the settings to get to that sound...
experiment A LOT!

all these tips are tru as true can be,
but from my experience, try with saw and kill the filter adsr, then add another oscillator and play w the filter, adsrs and waveforms,
and try some chorus in send mode.
ps, try lfo with phase on X or -, dont tempt to crank up the osc LFo, It sounds like crap. |

hey man
firstly:
this is the thread with links to my tracks, all of them done in pure Reason - i dont use anything else besides reason... check what sounds you may get out of it
http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php?topic=7747&forum=26&12
now second thing.. there's no "best patch" available, because each one likes different sounds and synths
but as kinda expirienced Reason user i may say the following:
1) dont look for best patches, just get the patch u like and try to play with it, change knobs and stuff - make a better patch and save it
then add echochorusphlange whatever
try to play with subtraktor's "FM" knob in its OSC section (upper middle side)
also SHIFT knobs in both malmstorm's OSC sections makes a great sound changes sometimes
2) Reason is able to produce/imitate VERY much synthesizers sound because its traktor and malmstrom got really hundred thousands of possible ways to change the sound it produces
You can get nearly ALL those goa/psytrance sounds u used to hear in most of todays and older bands
personally i've managed to tweak traktor and malm for like 90% of MFG-Astral Projection synths.. but indeed in many causes i took someone's patch as the basis and played with it.
3) there very much usable subtraktor patches Reason's factory sound bank
4) and the last but not least - try to get the following refills, they are really usable for making trance music:
Retronica
Clubotica
Synthotica
Hypnotica
Ambiotica
Orange eXtension
160/260 D&B
Peff's Malmstorm patches
Submissive Subtraktor patches
1001 subtraktor patches
thats it, i hope it was helpful
all the best and let me know how ur work is going
im always interested to listen trance made with Reason
