that's a very subjective question. how do you give weight/preferences to all of what goes on in festivals? (e.g. music, people, environment, entrance fees, your state of mind etc?) |

this will be a very good one.
I havent been to a big festival for a long time.
From what i heard last year was LABRYINTH, this is what all my friends told me.
but of course if your a full on mania, mabye VisionQuest?
It just depends on what music you like i guess. |

I went to a festival in Japan where a bunch of men wearing only loin clothes carried a float with a huge wooden penis on it. People were waving penises on sticks, women were eating penis shaped candies, and the strangest thing is there were sexy Brazilian samba dancers in the parade too. Perhaps it was a fertility festival? Pretty fun, though.
There's also a festival where people go swimming in the river in winter. And there's one where thousands of men in loin clothes try to touch a heavily defended, completely shaved naked man (the golden boy) in order to get good luck. It's apparently a great spiritual honor to be the golden boy, but he sometimes dies in the resulting mosh pit. Japan has lots of great festivals!
As for trance festivals, as yelloo suggested, what makes a festival good depends on what you want (and whether you actually want to enjoy it or not, in my opinion.) |

I highly recommend Naked Man Festival(Hadaka Matsuri) in Saidaji, Okayama. Picture thousands of fundoshi-clad men gathering in front of a shrine, then taking a dip in freezing water(in late february) then beating the crap out of each other in order to get a sacred stick(shingi)..supposedly the winner is deemed a fertile "manly" man. Insane. Must be seen to be believed! Sorry, no trance but some great live taiko! |
