Ableton 6.0.5 has precise db controls on the mixer faders now so the usual reason for cubases superiority fades away. i.e. I dont like not knowing precisely what my levels are so I NEED cubase.
Personally I dont see any reason to use cubase at all except its superior midi manipulation engine, which I dont need.

The only problem I am having in ableton is that if the 1st note to be played is at the start playback position, then the note doesnt play. also some midi notes sometimes get swallowed. so its a bit buggy still.
But session view convenience makes up for having to fine tune the midis.

For those of you who dont know - abletons session view is unprecedented in daw's. what it allows you to do is mix and loop multiple length clips together on the fly, instead of having to setup up all the midi parts (tracks and audio clips too) into a vertically adjacent configuration that cubase requires.
This allows you to experiment instantly with differeing cominations in a way that makes other daws obsolete. Also the method of recording clips is very streamlined to fit in with this.

Also ableton 6 has a new feature that is way cooler than undo history on clips called deep freeze. basically it allows you to bounce any instruments while preserving the midi data, and this bounced data can be rearranged, resynthesised, restructured at will. In cubase you have to solo your track, then export the audio, then import it as a clip, then cut it up or whatever.
In ableton its so easy. You need to copy some more frozen midi data from earlier in the track to later? no problem , literally just ctrl drag the frozen midi clip to wherever u need it. cut it up. reverse it. whatever.

ABLETON KICKS ARSE!!! big time
I hope they have a patent on session view to stick it to the dinosaurs.

Yes, I have to haul out the analyser and solo instruments to see their levels in Live 6.0.3

Anyway,
I *actually use* my midi keyboard when I use Live, because it makes it easy to record along with what's playing... with Cubase it felt like a pain and I'd always just draw with my mouse.

In all, it feels waaaay more like an instrument for making music than tediously coldly sequencing stuff, and I'm having fun.

Indeed. Sonar is similar. (Ableton paid attention . You can edit frozen data like any other audio clip. It also freezes much faster than Cubase (SX). I don't know why this is but it is frustrating when you are used to working fast and not waiting for stuff to process.

Sometimes I wonder why anyone uses Cubase at all...

Ah! I don't think they need to worry too much about Steinberg, CakeWalk, MOTU, Appple, Digidesign or any of the big DAW names copying this feature. It is inherent to the design of Live. Any other DAW wanting to include this feature would need a total redesgin and rewrite.
