I worked with most of those but your question is silly.
What is the best food - Apple, Cheesecake or Hamburger?
Everyone in the world is doing something without me |

relax pavel, if you think his question's silly then keep it for yourself. His just asking something that might be relevant for him. And since youve worked with most of em, why not answer him? have a happy and open mind. |

Well... I'll step in here.
Basically it depends if your on PC or Mac.
If your on PC go for Nuendo, its identical to Cubase SX it just has some more features for film. If thats what you need it for then great!
I have been using Live as a sequencer lately and it rocks. Its great for sketching out some ideas fast. Also the time warp features and other effects are cool. Its good to work with Loops. The Sequencer side isnt as intuative for me tho. Lets wait till Live 6.
Logic... Unless your on a MAC no point. Logic 5.5.1 is cool but why use a software thats no longer updatable. Seems kind of redunt to me.
Pro Tools. Just used it a few times. Seems like an industry standard in other industries. Havnt heard of many psytrancers using Pro Tools.

Pro Tools is pretty bad at midi so i would avoid this if you want to make psy. Its great at recording audio tracks though, thats why most big music studios use Pro Tools.
I use Logic for PC. It just works for me. I think I use about 5% of its features. I've also tried Nuendo wich I think was great. If you have a PC go with nuendo or just cubase. Mac then Logic. The plugins that comes with Logic are GREAT. Especially the new ones for the mac version. |

Pro tools is the industry (recording) standard, basically wich was the first software to allow pro multichannel reocrding but has a alot of limitations for music prod. also uses a lot of 3 keys shortcuts wich becomes a pain in the ass.,I have tried both Cubase/Nuendo and PRO tools and Nuendo beats the shit out of pro tools, besides vst plug ins run smoother than RTA'S.
So go for Nuendo/Cubase or Logic, let the "big studios" use Pro tools |

With a hefty price tag! That is bad advice. You don't need Nuendo to make music. Oh wait ... everyone uses warez these days silly me.

no mention of Digital Performer? a tough contendor with Logic if you are using Mac.
everyone seems really hyped on live. I used it for a while, but ended up getting really chaotic mixes (maybe just me though ) , but what about the sound quality - just didnt seem as good as a good DAW
Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

The best one is whichever you are most comfortable and productive with.

I recently talked to a guy which is a professional producer on the highest audiophil level I have ever seen. With monitorspeakers 30'000Euros EACH and stuff like that. You know, one of the guys who says that apogee converters are just medium class.
This guy said, that there is difference in SOUND between the different programs. Protools, even though widly used sounds worst, after that cubase sx, then logic, then nuendo and after that a couple of programs I dont remember, pyramix or something I think was one of it.
Thats not about the sound of the integrated EQ or something, but just about the basic sound, when mixing down a couple of tracks.
He said they compared it and found differences in 3dimensionality and the "openess" of the sound.
I know, cubase sx and nuendo use the same "engine". So I asked how it could be possible that they sound different. He said that that has partially to do how the audiotrack prioritys and handling is done... and he asked if I really believed, nuendo costs more than double of cubase sx just because of the few more features??
Ok, I have no idea about that differences, but this guy is really good in what he does, so I'm likely to believe him.

Nuendo costs more than double what SX does because the post-production and film sound industries expect a professional product to have a professional price-tag. If there was that much of a difference between the audio engines of SX and Nuendo you can bet Steinberg would use that fact in their promotional material for Nuendo. As it is:

Cubase and Nuendo share the exact same audio engine and pristine sound quality featuring 32 bit floating point bit depth. Nuendo also adds the ability to record at up to 192kHz and output up to 384kHz sample rates. |

Your friend with the expensive speakers (I bet he was really proud when he told you how much they cost) is talking out of his arse - and you can quote me on that.
