best configuration: leave it at the windows default
you should go out and buy more ram since 128mb is barely enough for win98 to run (winxp is even worse) i would say as a minimum 256 for music making but 512 is better |

yes but it takes up a lot more ressources than win98. the amount of ram is not affected by the improved ram adressing especially when you only have 128megs it´s simply not enough |

In _general_, the best thing regarding virtual memory is disabling it. Your, and everyone's, computer uses sometimes HD space instead of RAM - That's virtual memory, as you probably know.
While working with audio, your HD is under a lot of strain, and by enabling virtual memory the strain is further grown (hundreds on MB files could be created as virtual memory), thus causing downfall in performance.
In _your_ paticular case, disabling virtual memory will not be a smart choise, since you do have only 128 MB of RAM.
You really should add some RAM as mentioned above me. Don't play with your virtual memory in this stage.

Get anything higher than 320 MB of ram, and you can disable all virtual memory.
Now, since you have only 128 MB, you can set both the maximum and and minimum values to around 256 MB. Making them identical will make the page file (that's the name?) static, and it won't change it's size at most unpleasant times.

Mike - Virutal memory should allways be on.
anyway,
the best configuration for audio programs - u must set the v.memory min and max at the same amount.
with 128mb RAM - u should set it at 260MB or even 300Mb...
don't ever leave it to automaticly for windows - it will only eat your memory more or make ur audio progs work harder.

the best way to set your v.machine is like this :
if u have 2 h.drives then put the Virtual Memory on the h.drive that doesnt use Windows or/and Music softwares.
minimum : 0
Maximum : 640
don't try to put it more then 640 (useless)
in this situation your system can 'sweam' in v.memory
if u want to speed things up upgrade to 384mb ram (not more then that - useless to put more ram in win98 os) by keep the above settings.

guys... sorry to break some words, but:
you cannot turn off virtual memory in any windows.
though, u can change the pages swap file size.
it is true, if u have enough RAM (RDRAM/SDRAM whatever) which is the main memory for the computer, you don't need the pages swap file.
but it is not possible for audio: you easily get overfilled and u do need the swap file (for example when recording large files).
the M$ recommended .swp file's size for general purpose is around 1.5*RAMSIZE.
i noticed that the best thing to do if u have more than 256 Mb is to set the swap file's size to RAMSIZE.
but "performance" is not absolute thing - when i want my box to respond in real time - this is performance for me. if i wanted to record online many channells at once i'd change this.
bom... hope i'm clarifying things and not mistifying
M.
