I'll get the ball rolling on this controversy since it is directly-related to my search for the perfect kick. In Logic, I'm finding myself go right for its built-in compressor or multipressor. In SX, I prefer the sound of the VST Dynamics since it also has a built-in limiter to help me overcome clipping nightmares.

Ultrafunk has a very nice set of tools, compressor included. I'm not usually fancying the one-knob approach like the kwikcomp, ME compressor in Logic (for me) acts wierd.. fine in Cubase SX. Waves makes very tolerant compressors also.

If you are into the one-knob approach, aniwda, kwik comp, ME comp.

If you just need to boost the track any will do fine; they all do the same thing Logic's compressor has an auto-gain that you can set. Very quick to get the level right. However if you need to experiment, load 4 of them as inserts or into their own groups/busses to compare the sound.

Good luck, let me know your preference.

i also use the vst dynamics in cubase sx. but i honestly must admit that i dont use much compression...better leave it than use it without real knowledge.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

TC Works & Creamware has the best quality, i think but needs a dsp-card like Pulsar.
so I´m happy with ME-Compressor in CubaseSX & i don´t need more

Good comp.

...depends on sounds...

i like

- t-racks
- akai quadcomp
- the multiband in the ultrafunk-series ( sonitus )
- and of course the one inside logic...

bomski           experiment !
make it your motto day and night.
experiment,
and it will lead you to the light.
