A mate of mine does similar stuff, he does his field recordings with a SONY MD player and a mic.

I also use a Sony MD with a Sony stereo mic (MS907). Its good but it doesnt pick up very low frequencies (bellow 100hz).
One thing about the Sony minidisc recorders. You can't transfer what you've recorded digitally (through USB) to a computer. The reason why is that you hypothetically can use the minidisc to record the output of a stereo playing a copyrighted CD or record a concert wich is illegal! So fucked up.
Don't know if there is a way to circumvent this. Do anyone know if its only the Sony MD's that has this annoying copyright thing?

Arent't there MD's with optical output? That should give you the flawless transfer quality.
Anyway, somebody recommended me to find an old useless cell phone (we all have it) and take out the mic. from it. In most of the cases it's a condenser mic. I've heard that their quality is mostly better than the dynamic ones. It's not Neuman, but if you have good hands and spare cell phone you should try.

hey all
I'd like to get something to do this - some nice binaural mics that go in your ears & some portable recording device, preferrably one that can record at 24/96. Any recommendations for either of these? Ideally I'd like the recorder to have a playback option also, just so I can listen to tunes on it as well, but that's a secondary function. This is not only to record nature sounds, but also urban soundscapes too
new Hadal Drop album on the way
if you don't have the last one get in touch |

AvS - that sounds really daft, is it for real?
anyway, i would also suggest a minidisc with a nice battery operated condenser mic..
the
MZ-RH1
and
MZ-RH10
looks very nice, though they differ in functions, the RH1 seems to not support mono recording, while the RH10 supports both mono and stereo recording. the RH1 has lineout which the RH10 dont have.... there is more that differ, and i wonder why they make it so damn complicated, why not just put all functions in one player...
both these Minidiscs are Hi-MD so you got 1gb to fill...
its a damn jungle!
about 24/96 recording, i know M-AUDIO
MicroTrack 2496
and EDIROL
R-1, the edirol dont support 96khz, but 44.1khz
though these are no "music players" only for recording..
check Thomann...
i would like to get a Hi-md cause you can record longer.... stuff with compact flash seems like a expensive thing, but if you can afford a MicroTrack 2496 with a 4gb compact flash card i think you are settle for some nice field recordings.. though i think a MD will do enough.

Thumbs up for the MAudio Microtrack. I have one and I love it. Fantastic sound quality (in stereo!) so you can have cool passing noises. The provided mic is great, its easy and it provides phantom power to mics so you can plug in anything you want and record, say, vocals from a more expensive mic.
I got a 1gb card for 20GBP, and I don't see myself needing longer than an hour at a time. |

no1 uses a nagra
  Nocturnal Wizardz Recs
Bhooteshwara Records
Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more. |
