The "My Computer" - "Properties" window is showing a 1.00 GHz clock speed for a 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3800+ chip. Power settings are active for 'Home office/Desk' so windows should be reporting the full CPU value, right??

I'm looking for a benchmarking tool (preferrably testing at boot-up instead of through the OS) to find out what is going on. If I am running at 1GHz, that would explain why my laptop occasionally acts like it's running 256 MB of RAM when it really has 1 GB.           ELECTRON EYES / MARK-EVAN (NOR. CAL)

I have essentially the same chip/setup, and the OS didn't switch off the processor throttling either...

I wiped the "legit" XP install and replaced it with TinyXP 06 and it fixed the problem once I set it to "always on".

I haven't tried it but I think this is what you're looking for:

Also make sure the chip speed is detected properly in the BIOS, as sometimes it isn't, & runs at lower clock speeds. This has happened with my AMD athlon a few times, and simply going into the BIOS & save the settings (without changing anything) refreshed the chip detection @ the right speed.           Keep The Faith,

I've been in the BIOS once without making any changes and this did not affect the CPU detection. Just to clarify again, under the maximum performance power scheme, windows is detecting the CPU at 1GHz. The problem is that I don't know if that is really what it is running at but I am beginning to suspect that is the case. So how best to confirm it? I would not be knowledgable enough in the BIOS to navigate myself and I don't want to call some customer service honk at alienware.

@Meta: Thanks Aeon, I was thinking that a test of the CPU under the maximum performance setting would be the best way to detect the chipspeed?           ELECTRON EYES / MARK-EVAN (NOR. CAL)

A few things:

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-140.zip

This is a great program that will give you detailed info about your CPU (and memory and motherboard. That has a real-time, constantly updating CPU core speed measurement.

Make sure you have all the most recent updates from your hardware manufacturer... many motherboards have AMD CPU driver updates on the download page, one of the bug fixes was incorrect reporting of speed for some devices.

Also check out the AMD site, they have some add-on downloads like a "speedometer" that monitors the processor throttling for laptops with variable CPU settings. CPUZ is probably better but there might be other driver updates there etc.

If the throttling is still on, you may be getting max CPU, but only when the CPU is under load and a heavy application is running. When you check the Windows Properties when your computer is sitting at idle, its going to be lower if throttling is on.

Anyway, yes, the point is that you want to turn the throttling off altogether... check those drivers first... and like I said, I ended up installing a hacked version of windows to get mine to work... so it's not always as easy as it should be.          http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

The AMD site has a number of tools there that should help me to detect whether it underclocked or not. And thanks for pointing out the issue of throttling. I never knew about that. I guess I havne't fully earned my computer geek stripes yet. Peas.

OK the CPU tools tell me that the clockspeed is correctly 2400 MHz. But I noticed that the Bus speed is at 200MHz. Does this sound right? I thought this type of processer had like an 800 MHz front side bus?           ELECTRON EYES / MARK-EVAN (NOR. CAL)
