Which artist do you think makes the best bass that I can use as benchmark to assess the quality of my bass? |

heh, there is no one 'best bass'. And trying to sound like someone else will end up with music that... sounds like someone else, not like it's yours.

Too much kind of basslines to define the best one,
some are fat and black and some are thin and sharp, some are a bit of everything- what is your style?

Bass also sounds differently on different sound systems and in different places ... Sometimes the resonance and vibration of the walls in the club, will add unforgetable sound to your bass, while listening same track on open air party in the wood would creep it up.
Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else. |

dude,
just pick someone you like most
try to reach that level - then you can start reaching your own directions..... just don't forget about being your own self

hey man! dont waste your time on the baseline and benchmark it or whatever! make music instead and let the bass grow with it!
stop comparing your baselines to other tracks and try to focus on your self and your vision!
im not saying its bad to compare, only that it can be good to not compare all the time...

What kind of bassline are you trying to get?
Some bass sounds are good for fast punchy basslines (like Astrix's stuff) while other bass sounds are good for slower, more groovy basslines (like older Etnica stuff).
My personal taste is for bass by Vik On Injection (specifically the track "Galactica") which is punchy and defined, but also with a nice dark feel to it.
If you haven't already tried this I HIGHLY recommend using a spectral analyser like Spectrum Lab (http://www.qsl.net/dl4yhf/spectra1.html). A program like this will literally let you see the audio spectrum of a wave file - try taking a clip of a bass sound that you like from a favorite artist and analysing it. Then take a bass sound you are working on and compare. Spectrum analysers take a little bit to get used to but are a GREAT way to figure out just how so-and-so got that great bass sound.
Hope that helps - IM me if you want/need a crash course in using Spectrum Lab.
peace,

Yeah, I agree it can help trying to get a "known" bass you like, so you understand whats going on, I do it quite often, and then you put your personal work into it
But what bass to choose, thats really up to u...
I'm personally like a lot the bass like Astrix, Dynamic, Sesto Sento, Melicia, and that type of full-on bass (althoug it varies a lot from artist to artist) |

I should also mention that your KICK sound will affect the way your bass sounds and vice versa.
So when you're looking at examples of bass that you really like, try taking a close listen to the kick drum and see how it interacts with the bass.
Even if you match their bass sound perfectly, having a different kick will make the bass sound different than it really is.
