hello all, i'm new to the forums. i'm just starting out into production. i'm no where near talented, but i've got alot of time to spare and hopefully with some practice and effort i can one day be a talented psytrance producer, who knows.
anyways, to get on with my questions.
first, is the typical range for bpm on psy tracks in or around the 135-145bpm area? is 140bpm an ok place for a newb to start out at?
second, i know that the bassline is an extremely important part of any psy/goa track. i've downloaded the vb-1 VST, and am working on getting it to work in my FruityLoops3 at the moment. once i get it going, what structure should my bassline follow? and how should it relate to any kicks i decide to add in?
any other tips would be appreciated if anyone has anything to add =]
i've worked out my first melody here http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/phuckedupmusic.htm
i know it's far from complete and all, that was just some screwing around, but am i on the right track at least? |

wow, intelligent response. i wish i could have thought of using the search button all by myself. seriously, wow. i guess that's reserved strictly for prick forum elitists, so they have something to post when they got no actual response, becaus eit's totally obvious that anyone who asks a question forgot that a search function exists. keep bumping that post count you knob.
anyways, i have searched for both. the first question i am just looking for a confirmation on, because I HAVE SEARCHED and that is what i found. i just wanted to have it confirmed so i don't have to worry about being off on what i thought was right.
the second question i couldn't find anything that really cleared a whole lot up for me, after, wow, check this out, ALREADY DOING A SEARCH. i wanted to know how many kicks and rhythm should interact with my bassline.
EDIT. as for the being on the right track question, i was reffering to the melody i was working on. i was wondering if i had the right goa'ish sound comign along or not. |

i found lots of information on bassline's. but it was mostly just on the difference between full on and groovy basslines. i can't find anything regarding the relationship between the bassline and the percussion in a track, and how the should interact with eachother. maybe i overlooked it, maybe my search criteria was off and i need to try some different searches, i'm not sure. |

Let's all cool down shall we?
Joao, let's be nicer to new comers
Phuckedup--> for a start i would recommend to browse older posts, we did pretty good amount of discussions about most of the topics you'll face as a fresh psy producer. If you'll have any specific question regarding any issue that you didn't find an answer for, feel free to post.
And welcome!

OK,
Heres some v basic tips if you're just starting, in laymans terms. Yep use 140 bpm, base your track in C major (all the white keys).
Listen to a lot of kicks and choose one that has a hi freq content 'booh' sound.
Use a bass line that is a single saw, choose a lp filter and turn it down, play with the adsr envelope until it fits with the kick. Read up on compressors, and use one on the bass, until your kick and bass sound tight.
Its probably best to not superimpose kicks and bass notes.
That should be enough to get you going.. |

i'd rather say 145bmp... most trance being released is at 145bmp (mostly full-on) 140 is more progressive stuff?
also... compressor is not a "must-have"... only use it if it makes your sound better.
still about the bass, don't use resonance on your bass line... it will be easyer to make the bass sound good
in a bass line the fewer notes the better...
make sure in your kick that the first hit is the stronger one.
if your kick and bass distort when they're played togther use eq...

I make it like this:
1. most important you need a good bass source and a great kick drum for a bass source you could try the VB-1 which is basically really used by too many artists but to begin with it’s good!
2. EQ – Definitely this is the most important part and is very delicate also you need to cut out the highs in the bassline and pull up a bit the mids. It all depends on the sound you have as a source you have to train your ear to distinguish all the different frequencies but I will send you a preset of EQ so you have an image of how it should look like! I use Waves V4.0 - EQ8 to do this as you can hit 8 different frequencies with this
3. COMPRESSION – The Eq makes the sound equal with the kick drum and the compressor makes the sound, sound bigger from the outside! I use Waves V4.0 – C4 compressor there is a preset there it is called bassline and I use that but still experiment so you get the hang of how it should sound. I use same compression for the kick drum.
Hope this helps
