Well, the way to go about it is just to try to figure out what the different machines do. If you figure out just how to create sound with for example one subtractive synth (the most commonly used type of synth), you'll find that most other synths are easier to learn. The same goes with drum machines, samplers and effects.
In this forum you should be able to find some tutorials on how to make synthsounds, basses, leads, and soforth. Just check out "The mother of all..." threads pinned in the top
Starting in a program with "making some beats" is most likely the best way forward

Cubase isn't better at all. If u know how to do things after a while the difference between the sequencers gets smaller.
Here are two essencial tips for starting producing:
1. Read the manuals/tutorials about your sequencers and about synthesis
2. Play around to get the feeling what happens by changing different parameters
In fl6 u can use the 3xOsc, which is a good general synth, for learning the basics of synthesis.
Start a new track, add different elements, Kick and bass, drums, fx, leads, pads. Try to get every element as good as possible, if u r not statisfied with something try to improve it or delete it and add something new. Producing takes time, don't expect to archieve a proffesional and individual style in some hours.
