White Noise was quite tricky though, and as I recall my mastered version still wasn't perfect - want me to post before/after of that?

sure why not!

Atropa - White Noise - mastering comparison
http://www.yousendit.com/download/cEd0QndPZDV3TGg1VEE9PQ

Only a short clip, and I'm no Duncan Morrison, but it should show the difference.
FYI this is the only track I've got for mastering where I had to normalise it before mastering to get the peaks below 0dBFS! Long live SX and 32-bit float exports.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Hey Colin, any reason you don't use a plugin like Ozone?

Also I take it the Wave MS Matrix is just for checking in mono? It doesn't form part of the final chain.

Here's the Free Range mastering comparison again for those that missed it last time:

Firstly I use a combination of plugins and hardware to master, and I don't think Ozone will let me take a signal out of the middle of its chain and run it through my compressor. Secondly my mastering chain isn't set in stone and I sometimes check out different plugins for it.

Nope, the M/S Matrix is part of the final mastering chain. For checking in mono I use another S1, with the width set to zero and rotation at full... when I switch it in I get the whole mix in one speaker only - true mono, not phantom mono like you get with most mono switches.

Good answer I forgot Ozone is totally useless if you have external hardware. Plus it's nice to experiment.

I'm confused about the M/S matrix.. I googled it and got some blurb about mono/stereo and I assumed it put the track the insert was on into mono. I tried it on a mixdown and it totally altered the sound of it but I didn't pay much attention to whether it was stereo. (I only tried it for a couple of seconds) The change was so drastic I wondered what the use was?

very nice thread.
now we know that it's all about mixing.
i've always thought the overall volume was an important thing, now i know it isn't.

Yup. If you haven't got decent production skills in the first place, don't expect mastering to make your track sound good.

Anyway people are still asking me about the comparison so here's another yousendit link the the OOOD mastering comparison.

OOOD - Free Range was mastered by Duncan Morrison @ The Cutting Suite, London - http://www.thecuttingsuite.com/ except for Oh My (Good Golly Me) (the second track in the mastering comparison) which I mastered to match his sound; he didn't get it quite right even after several tries so I did it myself.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
