That is by choice!

I don't need to see all the stuff that you see in that image. You can drag the vertical devide between the track names and the tracks. If you drag it left, the volume fader disapears into the track bins, if you move it to the right, more stuff appears (pan, trim, phase, mono/stereo, inputs outputs, sends etc). All those things are widgets that move themselves automaticly (when you drag the vertical devide) and that you can reorder at will.

At the bottom of the screen you see all the busses. You can hide them by clicking on a button (or using a shortcut key).

Colin isn't using any track folders in his project which also makes things look cleaner but means alot of scrolling to get to wherever you want to be.

The MASSIVE advantage of all this is that I never ever have to open a mixer (console) view in Sonar. Everything is right there. I can add insert FX, add sends (on the fly), modify levels etc. The workflow is just so much faster than anything Cubase can offer.

I'll do some images to demonstrate how things can look by dragging a few things arround.

Here are two images that show two extremes:

I prefer having this flexibility.

PS: The chassis Fan thingy isn't part of Sonar.

Of the 2 screenshots posted, the way the dual monitors appear arranged are on top of each other.

(So the mouse moves off the bottom of the first screen onto the top of the second)

Is this a better way of working? I use left>right config, so it's just a very wide desktop, rather than a tall one.

Tomos, my images are composite shots. I only have one screen at the moment so I copy pasted the images into each other to give the full view.

well sonar interests me but i got too used to cubase. you can do that on the fly with cubase too, when you choose a midi channel, you have two buttons edit buttons (the E thing), the top one takes you to the midi channel (which you'll rarely use) but the lower one takes you to the channel editor. here you have access to all the sends and inserts. yeah you have to open a mixer but it's a 1 channel mixer only two clicks away
but yeah it lacks those volume faders that sonar and fl have but oh well.

recently i've been trying a sx+fl setup, it's really good but a bit complicated, having to go to the F11 window (vst instruments), opening fl vsti while memorizing the position that you want to add something, go to the playlist (after making a pattern with that something) and drawing it. it's a bit slow and boring.
i've to find a way... maybe dual monitor...

Thanks Undertow.

I'm just debating to myself whether it'd be better to have a tall desktop versus wide. I'm not at home at the moment so I can't play around. But I get the feeling that Cubase as a 'tall app' would work better... hmm.

Opinions on dual screen setups?

It depends on your workflow I suppose. If you use track folders, it is easy to have all the relevant tracks visible on a normal sized screen (vertical size I mean). Then you can use the extra width of a second screen (or a wide screen) to have your synths or plugins somewhere to the right. In Cubase you can also leave the mixer views on the second screen.

But you might also use the second screen for MIDI track editors or anything else. It depends how you work really.

PS: I've tried once working with a setup where the second screen was virtually below the first screen. I found this very very unintuitive. I personaly much prefer having the second screen virtualy to the right.

This way, moving the mouse to the right and passing the screen boundary leaves the mouse cursor at the same height. This works much faster because you only move your eyes a tiny bit to keep track of the cursor. In a virtual vertical setup you have to actually search for the cursor again.

Nice looking arrangement.

Here is a 118 audio track screenshot, well, I could only fit the low part of screen.

I think we need a "The mother of all track counts" thread.

I must be really tired because I clicked without thinking on the scroll bar in your image trying to to see what was above!

Only on projects this size... and the reason I posted this project rather than another in the first place was because this one is bigger than anything else I've worked on recently. Also, I've only recently upgraded from SX2 which had a bug which prevented you from moving certain classes of tracks outside their default folders; now I'm on SX3 I'll get much more into folder tracks I'm sure.

Everything you mention here and more can be achieved in the Inspector pane in SX, which I had hidden in the screenshot. In SX as well as in Sonar, you never need to use the mixer views in normal use. But let's not turn this into an SX v Sonar thread, cos you'll lose           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Mine is a composite image too. At the moment I only use one monitor (1600x1200).

Ah but the difference is that I can see all the faders on all the tracks and all the busses at the same time straight from the arrange view. I can also access all the plugins straight away by double clicking on them.

Lol, try editing your frozen tracks then. ;-P

Anyway, I am not saying that Sonar is better than Cubase. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I am merely pointing out some workflow advantages in response to someone reacting with an uninformed comment about clutter.

/drags the frozen audio file out of the Freeze folder into the arrangement

[EDIT] Yes I know it's not quite as convenient as Sonar, but it works!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
