The beauty of originals is that even after several years when you look at at the cd or lp it still transmits certain vibes. The look, touch and feel of the music with the corresponding artwork transcends me to that period. Even some decade old goa trance or melodic full on feels fresh.
I do not get that same feel when i listen to decade old mp3s...dont know the reason for this.Does anyone else experience this or does this have to do with the fact that the precaution that is taken to preserve the cds makes them more exciting to listen to?

i wud add the money factor also, i mean psycologicaly once u have paid for sumthin u have a placebo of value in ur head
the problem with valuing art is, till u dont understand it, it's worthless but wen u do understand it, it's priceless!! |

I have hundreds of original CD's, and although the joy of owning a CD is great, I must say that today I am almost only buying downloads. Because I have so many CD's, I don't have room to store them for display, so practically all of them are now hidden away in boxes and cabinets, and as I have all the most important CD's in my DJ-case, I very rarely look at the covers.
In one way it's sad to see the CD-sales dropping, but on the other hand I am also happy as a consumer - I can now buy much more great music with just a few clicks on the mouse.

Support all the artists and labels that you like and are among your very favorite ones, noone can buy everything and noone needs to buy everything, support your favorite artists/labels and you can download the rest and if you happen to like a lot some of them then you are free to support them too by buying original.
We live in difficult times but everyone can buy 1-2 cds a month and download all the rest 50-60 releases if he likes. Its a joke if someone claims that he cant spend 25-30 euros a month for his favorite music (and i am not talking about people from very poor countries cause thats a different case).
Nothing compares to an original cd,when you download a track its just another track in your hard drive among terrabytes of other music stuff but when you touch and feel an original cd then immediately many memories come to your mind from parties, moments listening to that cd,special life occasions and even the moment when you bought it and paid for it.
Original music and downloaded music is like memories and photographs, everyone remembers vaguely his past (downloaded music) but only with photos you got a clear image of how those moments trully looked like and you can remember even more and accurate things.
If you love something you must support it otherwise without your support one day this thing will die.

I like having originals but it is becoming an abstract interest. I don't open the cases or spend much time with the liner notes after cracking into something new for the first time. The music itself is medium-independent; you can copy it to your HD, burn it to some new physical substrate, beam it through the atmosphere, or any number of other things. The package it comes in is pretty cool... and as a former record collector, I'll always have a soft spot for the physicality of vinyl records and CDs... but I find myself less and less enamoured with them over time. Quite frankly, I like my gargantuan HD with its corresponding convenience. I don't need to root around in a box to find the case I'm seeking; I just go right to the song I want and start listening. Once everything is properly tagged and sorted, bliss! Going digital offers a paradox; music becomes more insubstantial, and--some would say--less valued, but this actually marks a return to (or movement toward) its true nature as fleeting vibrations in the atmosphere.

More than that. I'd pay for somebody to transfer all my music to one HD so I can plug it on my main PC and share it to my living room. At the moment all the CDs are just picking dust.

Stop creating waste people, buy digital.
Embrace technological change, go forwards not backwards...
Its time labels and artist shift to some kind of digital artwork, maybe a flash nice animation or something interesting that interacts with music that can add some value to digital purchases.

BLEHHHH.
You know what adds value to digital purchases? A CD mailed to me that I can hold, look at, play in the car, let friends borrow, take out of the collection in 10 years and still love, and still have after my external drive gets corrupted for no reason.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

Real CDs are really interesting, but as mentioned they have some problems associated to them.
Most of the time I listen to copies I made in wav or lossless from my laptop or computer plugged on a high-Fi sound system or iPod-like devices.
But when playing at parties or playing on my CDJs, I always use my originals, which are sooo good looking!
Originals rule!

im also not found of cds or vinyl anymore... i feel this is pure waste of resources and a constant polution factor on an allready troubled planet.
usually musicians are asociated with a great ecological sense so it doesnt make sense to support a medium thats really expensive and poluting and in reality offer nothing that a digital music file cant offer to the costumer/listener.

Same same here! And I know the reason:
Its all related to associations in life! Any action that we did in life then we do in the future is activating memories in our brain, those memories are transmitted to feelings (good or bad, depend on the old action we had before).
I have a lot of original cds too.
I remember that I was saving those 10 – 20 dollars when I was 13 years old every month specially to buy that new cd I waited for.
I was very excited every time I did that action.
I began by walking all the way to the shop smiling (around 40 minutes walking) and super excited just to have that colorful cd in my pocket! And once I did I was just too happy! Back then, in 1995 I used computer only for games, never for music. I had my audio machine with big speaker for music stuff not pc.
All these are very good memories for me.
I did that action till 18 years old. Then at 2003, I started to check music at net…it was quicker for me having music through the net, but I lost some of my best childhood journeys (the excitements by saving money, spending it on something I love, walking all the way to my destiny! My new cd, etc… is disappeared), I simply used this pc machine to have music and listen to it. No more human communication, when I was going to the shop, I was meeting many dudes there, also in the way to there I saw people, sky, air,…all this was a trip for me, but now its not, iam simply stuck in my room with pc, having a lot of mp3 by simple click, then removing it if its bad – not my taste or better to say, not what I have expected for…no more walking no more people in reality…all became virtual and without feelings for me. But that doesn’t mean iam dying here. its simply became like purchasing anything else through the net for me. Maybe more comfortable and quicker, but without feelings from the action, coz its only clicking by mouse. The feelings I get is only from the music if it was crafted good for my taste. But not from the way of buying it. Unlike the past, I loved also the whole action of buying cds as I described up there, even if the music was not that good, I still have some love with the cd, coz I made a lot of steps to reach it (saving money, walking, meetings friends, etc…).
So today, when I take from my case an Iron Maiden original cd or any other bands then hold it in my hands and look to it, I smile automatically and feel very good. Without even digging why I feel good. Its done quickly , some kind of reflex. But if I dig, then I know the reason, its all written and described very well up there!
So, for me mp3 didn’t build any exciting associations in my life except of mouse click and putting my credit card numbers every time I wish to buy something or pay bills to my country (government, tons of traffic tickets, iam good driver, those pigs like to screw me on the street and rob my money), so I feel bad actually coz Iam going to pay those many bills by this mouse click and keyboard clicks. this is the only association I have, paying paying paying from this mouse and keyboard clicks actions for something I don’t love. Maybe you love to pay bills for your country and ugly police.
That’s me.

Original for me too, all the way, I have over 1000 original cds and would never ever sell them or do them away... For several reasons:
- you take more time to listen concentrated to a real cd (I put it on and listen carefully while a PC gets used while listening, and this means, less active listening)
- sometimes the story inside a cd or the artwork explains the feeling of the artwork
All the other reasons are mentioned in other topics already.
For me it would be a very sad day if CD dies. I will ALWAYS prefer them over a virtual file...
And Profane, saying you have "no place to store" cds is really uncreative, you can make wooden structures yourself, my 1000+cds are only taken 2m² |
