Does anyone even bother? I made this mix on friday ( ftp://djnutz.blacklight.net/Vector%20-%20Blue%20&%20Red%20Together.m4a ), and i tried to beatmatch as many of the mixes as possible....came out alright, but it was a real pain in the ass. Also, these tracks seem to lose a little magic without the proper intro's and outro's, or when played at a modified pitch.
So, on saturday, i played the chill room at this unorganized, underground psy party; and i didn't beat match one single mix! I sat down on a toolbox trying to remember who i was (my state of mind was very psychedelic), and just bleeding one song into the next (which was difficult enough, given the circumstances)...and everyone LOVED it! the main room, which was playing really scary trance, just died out and the chill lounge was filled with trippin kids zonked out, smoking hookah, dancing a little, talking with friends, etc....I ended up playing for 4 hours til i started crashing at 7:30am, despite my audience asking for more. The only people who weren't feeling it were some old school dj-ish folks, who seemed to be annoyed that i wasn't doing anything impressive.
But i mean, WTF? tempos are all over the place, most people are sitting down in the chill lounge, and no one ever gets to hear this music anywhere in the northeast USA except for when i'm playing it....so whats the point of stressing over a beatmatch?
what do you guys think?

for me as a listner in chill i wud jus like the dj to take me to a journey (i know sounds like it's been heard 100 times b4) but yea for me that wud touch my heart more then my brain
personally i dont give a f*** bout the beat matching even in psy 'the story' holds the key
the problem with valuing art is, till u dont understand it, it's worthless but wen u do understand it, it's priceless!! |

I do it sometimes... it's fun and a good groove/speed sustainment too.

Don't worry about beatmixing chill out...I never do it...not because I don't know how to beatmix (I play trance too and it's not a problem for me to beatmix) but because if I do I will be forced to play only a part of my case and I always want my sets to have all types of downbeat music...the story I try to tell when mixing is a story that would be impossible to tell if I had to beatmix...and still I always feel that the people like my selection in the end...there are always 2 tracks that blend perfectly in style and atmosphere yet their BPMs are way off...so why limit yourself and not mix them

man, all depends on the purpose and style you are playing.
it sucks to sacrifice freedom of choice 'cause of tempo, i agree...
but at the same time, beatmatching can create something unique out of two tunes, specially when you want to keep people grooving.. . I tend to beatmatch maybe 30% of my dub sets and then freestyle the rest, using weird elements of both songs and proper gethooFX, brah.
if i feel like playing deep ambient, maybe i won`t beatmatch a single tune. On the other hand, when i am playing more upbeat lounge or chilly breaks (100-120), beatmatching works wonders |
