And the problem with darkpsy is not that it's bad.
Melodic goa definitely does its job way better than any other music: wash out all worry and give you total inner spiritual peace, and put a smile on your face.
However, when it comes to dark, I feel like the genres of dnb and hardcore do a much better job at being dark than darkpsy.
So someone comes to a psytrance party for the first time.
If they want melodic music, they'll be put off since most psy parties these days like lots of dark (or at least they don't switch to melodic until waay later than most newbies would wait).
If they want dark music, they'll hear darkpsy and be like "wow, dnb is so much darker than this".
Edit: this is kind of stream-of-consciousness and rambling and I didn't put that much thought into it so take with a pound of salt. |

Sorry but, melodic goa don't put a smile on my face. i just think it sounds ridiculous.
Different people, different opinions about music.

My thoughts on this video:
1. Compare Youth in this video with the Youth interviewed in this month's Sound on Sound Magazine. He's working with Paul McCartney now (!)
2. Did I hear that "Twisted" was the FIRST single-artist goa trance record EVER?
3. Anybody catch the 1-second shot of OTT bobbing his head? Butterfly studios!

Psy trance now-a-days just ha such a bored and lethargic feel to it!

i dont think thats true for the music.
thats true for SOME music because WE the people are FUCKING MORONS and eat this stupid shit up like idiots.
if we didnt eat it, they wouldn't make it.
why is everything conservative and shitty now? lets make some fucking copycat electro now kids!
stupid fuckers. our scene is veritable fountain of juvenile idiocy and commercial "wish i was britney" vibes.
WAKE da fuck UP folks! and no i dont mean you 5 trancers grooving to weird shit in the middle of usa with no crowd. im talking to the masses of fucking sheep who make massives featuring the same damn live acts that are always featured... and SUCK!
that and our scene doesn't value age and experience AT ALL!!!!!
fuck you old crusty poor hippies, we have new kids with sunglasses and they spend their parents money on ANYTHING just to get out of the house for the night...
if i may connect threads- its not the presence of a young crowd that bothers me, its the TOTAL lack of older trancers.
and why? why are they staying home, quitting trance, etc?
because zero consideration is given them by the punk-ass little rich bitches making factories er Parties, only consideration for toeing the line of what some label told you was cool (their own stuff of course)
in short- parties have become CHEESy monochromatic cartoons of psychedelia
think for yourself and question authority- timothy leary |

They're not staying home, they're at the club with the old psy producers and the cool new mature tech/house style dontcha know.

Leary had his own motives to create propaganda against the authorities.
By all means think for yourself, but lets not be so one-sided as to only question authority. |

I have an old (1999) book about Prodigy and there are parts where Keith and Liam tell about the outdoor parties in the beginning of the 90's. They wrote about people high on LSD and MDMA while dancing in outdoor locations. The music was a combination of Techno, Acid House and what later transformed into "Rave" music. By reading the book I could see easily that the only thing that differentiated those parties from the parties you have seen in the video were the Indian elements that came a bit later. I also think that what makes today's Psy so boring is that most of the nowadays producers were raised listening too much of the same style. When you have somebody who's musical background is Infected Mushroom and a few others will end up having a very limited palette. The true greatness of the old times was going to a party and listening Kraftwerk alongside Underworld alongside KLF alongside Kevin Saunderson.

Prodigy or Liam was always a very special producer.Manystlyes.Was all the way inspiring me someways.Fav tune is still one of firsts hehe Out ofSpace (2 decades or so from now)some elements were heavily infuleced whole genres.
But psytrance or goa existed plenty years before twisted I just need to look to my vinyl cases.

Big respect to Ocelot, just one small corection.... there are ppl doing things old school style, 120ppl in a island or a farm with watterfalls, good sound system and good old/new psytrance....some old goa sets to just spice it up...ppl in their late 20s early 30s and even 40s.....
The thing is parties like this don't have budget to contract djs and lives.. we have to count on friends that are dj to compose the line up...... |
