hey guys, i was wondering does the order of making a bass line matters? i mean, usually u find a cool bass sound then u have to, eq and compress? wich comes first..because a wrong move in one of them messes up the whole thing.
i dont know, im getting kind of confused.
because i cant seem to find a bass in mogics ESM, that sounds good after all of this.
can u guys help me out?
thanks

ignore EQ and compression first, and make a good bass patch.. tweak a little, learn the parameters, and remember that small adjustments can mean big difference...

if you are going for a fullon type bass, KbbbKbbbK
or 16th works aswell, but needs lots of fine tailoring on the bass so it dont clash with the kick... either lower the bass not on every beat to make more room for the kick... or use sidechain compression to duck the bass when the kick hits..
or layer a hipassed bass on everybeat to get the rolling sound and have original bass in between every beat....

ESM is a bass lots of known and unknown artists use, GMS have used it alot.. i havent got the chance to use it cause i dont use logic, but i got some samples of it....

im pretty sure that you can make a very nice bass with this machine...

so remember no EQ or compression before you know why....

or the other way around, lots of EQ and compression even if you dont know why...

just tweak till you bleed and are so frustrated that you could smash the computer...

To add,
some bass instruments needs lots of EQ and compression..
if you know what you want and how to achieve it then why fiddle with a bass patch that cant get any better...

a general compression on bass is:
ratio, 4:1 to 12:1, attack 1-10ms, release 20 or auto, gain reduction -6to-13, knee: hard

but for some bass a totaly different setting might be better... go by ear

sample 1 octave note by note and use the esx 24(filter and envelop) ,you can create a multi instrument with the samples one octave lower(like a second oscillator),but imo the es 1 sound better and you don t need to sample it note by note.

safa with the esm or es1 the bass should sound good with nothing, just by tweaking the synth, then when you re there, use a eq.

the order in which you put compresor or eq is matter in this way:

if you put compressor first and after that you put wq then you compres the hole signal first and then you eq the compresed signal.

the second option-eq first comp' after-then you will eq the signal and compres the equed signal.there is a difference..BUT:BOTH OF THE WAYS ARE OK..IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE.there is not right or wrong here..so try to experiment..this is a hard way but a good way:)

I agree with your first statement. Forget EQ and compression to start with. The ESM can sound really polished and ready-to-use by it self- Thats the cool thing about it, the only thing thats not so cool is the resonance. I almost NEVER use it on psy bass.

I don't see the need to make the bass play 16th all the time. Just kbbbkbbb should be fine IF you really want to make the same bassline as every other psy artist today

Oh and I dont think compression on ESM is necessary at all. Infact ive been using less and less compression over the past few years. It's simply not necessary an many cases! You have so much control over the sound when using digital synth so instead of putting a compressor on the track by instinct, you should start by tweaking the patch or playing with velocity.
