Hi, recently I was checking this track's wave and noticed the bass notes have this pretty transient that makes them snappy.

I've tried achieving a similar result with many synth / eq combos without any success so far.

Also I notice the wave is not a ver clear sawtooth wave however it sounds like it. Is this the result of eq? a very fast pitch bend? transient design? or what?

Any idea is welcomed.

Yeap, looks nice. Though I'm not sure I can be very helpful here, but this is something I would start with.

First of all (and this is the main part) you need to tweak it out to maximum from the synth. You need 2 things - osc retrigger and fast filter envelope. In my experience Surge and Ace are both pretty capable.

Second - compression and especially its attack parameter. Not much hints there, but New York compression trick might be helpful getting that kind of transient - that's on top of normal compression

Third - transient modulators / shapers. Personally I didn't get too good results in the end, and 99% of times removed such processors from bass, but still worth trying.

Quadrafuzz helps a lot.

wtf is that waveform ,look like it screwed ,phase shifted, do you have a sample ? just curious.
my culture vulture can do similar thing so i guess some saturation/distortion might do the trick.
tweaking the synth like makus was saying, with the retriger and phase to get a click and suitable envelops might be the solution for the transient, or layering a drum transient but doubt it

for the waveform it can be the result of very steep filter ,saturation and probably some other element..i guess quadrfuzz or something similar could screw your waveform like this without much trouble..

Hi thanks for your answers...

- This is from a released mastered 2009 album, i'm trying to locate the artist so i can personally ask.

- I have tried hard filter env and saturation settings but nothing gives this kind of transient (yet).

- Quadrafuzz certainly distorts and phases the wave as PoM says but not exactly, and the transient is not affected like sample.

- The only way I have come close to a transient like that is a fast pitch env, but i'm not sure about that on a bassline.

Sample is this:

maybe es1 could give you the transient in fast attakt it click like hell but dunno if it acutally make a peak like this

yeah man i ckeched and it s probably es1 with some steep filtering eq and/or a kind of saturator that often come with "hiden filtering" too push harmonics.
i tried a other synth with phase retriger control ,ace but it don t make such transient, it s way smaller peak , maybe largo or massive could get there..but i pretty sure it s es1 as it s comonly used, i think with the culture vulture i could get such waveform too even the peak out of any synth, maybe it s was used...who know

Yeah... i got it... well i got very close using sylenth, filter drive and quadrafuzz with some high band tweaking, and yeah it come very close to that when i invert the osc's phase

Thanks you guys.

ok nice man if you dont really get there try es1 as it will make you such "transient" wihtout any problem, maybe vb1 could do it too? from what i remember it was very clicky but no idea if there is a peak in the wave

in fact we havent think about it but it s logical.. it will work on any synth that let you retriger the osc on the peak of the sawtooth wave, in es1 it s quiet different it seems though, the click is there to emulate fast attack of some snappy analog synths have no idea if it s produced the same way, i tried briefly got usable result with sylenth and largo but i think my favorite was es1, it cylce better /make tempo faster

it can be even more simple than that..any synth with non retriger oscillator that you ahve to sample to make a bassline will make you peak like this, from esm too minimonsta to any analog synth.

Yeah i think the key is phase tweak, osc retrigger and distortion / saturation.

I like how it sounds... it gives this ver snappy feel to low octave basslines. Add right kick and it gets pretty neat.

Mild gritty saturation on clean transient and boomy cycles is win.

hm, i think i was wrong about Ace, can't find that function now. Maybe i mixed it with some other synth
