I've noticed that Mike A hasn't used full 1/16th notes for the bassline. It seems like he has cut about 1/64th from the end of the note. Is that a good tip? Do you guyz do that? |

I almost always end up with notes that are not quite a full 16th. The reson is that you have a release phase on almost every synth. Very few synths let you have 0 release, and if you do, you get pops.
So I set up my ADSR like this, usually:
Attack: 0
Decay: about 1/32nd note
Sustain: about 50%
Release: as fast as possible without clicking
Then I end the note after 3/4 of 16th note, which gives time for the level to drop before the next note. |

You are right....on the virus for instance if you make a bass and set the release on 0 you get a slight pop which gets fixed if you set the release on 2......
now correct me if im wrong:
when you are playing a 1/16 bassline it doesnt mean all the notes you are playing are 1/16 long (i mean the length of the note itself), i like making some notes shorter than other notes and that way i get a more human feel to the bassline....try playing around with that..... |

@SuperGlue
i do my BL in mono it feels more powerful and
less messy IMO.
I make sure to take the pan and put it in the center(both channels) if it's a vsti that comes to the mixer trough a stereo channel.
i don't know if thats the way but it sound much more powerful on mono.
Use the sequencers inspector to control notes length if you can get it trough envelope.

Indeed. Like thocik said, each synth has a release time. I make it shorter so the actual audio won't overlap, getting ugly peaks and too much bass. It's also good to leave a bit of no-bass between bass notes so it won't sound like one low hum, but as seprate notes.
Best way is to experiment, see what note length sounds best. When making bassline lengths, use 1/64 res or even 1/128 to see what works best for you.

i put on my bass: filter , distortion, maxxbass, compressor, eq and sometimes reverb. after all this chain I get a really big bass!
* try to change the length comp. in the midi track parameters of the bass`s vst.

If the bass does not coincide with the kick, do I still need to eq the bass so that it won't interfere with the kick's frequencies and vice versa? |

A tip for compressing the bass is set the threshold and ratio very very high to help you find the right attack and release time. |

taking about lenghts of notes, sometimes you can do nice stuff doing some variations in notes lenghts, gives much more interest to bassline
and as mike said, you don't need to do the whole 16 notes, and I never put bass at same time as kick
and superglue, i always use mono, unless i'm using a vst that just plays stereo...
also try and set filter attack to zero, sustain to medium/low value, release to near zero or even zero, and with decay control speed/time of frequency going down until you find the right spot, so it guives some punch (attack 0) and then goes down (decay time), kinda like a natural Bass would sound....
experiment... |

thockin,
you have helped in realising why my sound is always "popping" and "cracking" this has been a major dilemma for me for some time...
Man, I can believe how helpful this topic has become
thanks |

Another ADSR technique is to use
Attack: 0
Decay: 1/16th note or slightly less
Sustain: 0
Release: 0
This makes the bass POP and immediately fade away. It's so fast you just hear it as a well defined bass note.
Note that with this technique, you can't hold a note longer than 1/16th since there is no sustain.

Now a topic like this for kiks would rock !!!
examples and good screen shots
and what time signature is being used...
See when i put my sequences in 1/16
then back to 4/4 the patterns i draw for that sequence in matrix edit
are short or to long on a different track with a different insturment.
