Is anybody still struggling with using the side-chain effect on the kick and bass?
p.s. I just actually got the whole point of it, and my basslines sound good.
I've heard the following:
* Make sure the bass bounces
* Use the compressor to glue the bass to the kick
* Classic mistake is have a very loud kick. (That's why creating your own parameters is much better.
Feel free to share some of your tips IsraTrance. |

side-chaining to me is pretty straight forward. its just one of those things though that, if its done well everything will blend and as you say glue, everything together, and make a tighter and better mix. it also gives it that "rolling" feeling when you use 1/16 style basslines (kbbbk). however it doesn't make everything sound good. some leads sound better uncompressed and unside-chained, while some really melodic trace leads sound awesome with slight side chaining. so its kinda what sounds good, and where it sounds good at. so thats where alot of experimenting comes into play. Now my question is- is it necessary to to use side-chain compression on a off-beat bass line (KbKbKb) and on gallop basses (KbbKbb)? Just curious! thanks!
My opinion EQing your basses.. i prefer to EQ before i side-chain and then onces again after so its getting all necessary freq. cut or added before and after. however there is many ways to get a good sound. this way just works for me! =D
more of my tracks now days don't use direct compression (side-chain compression), in FL studios there is a effect plug-in thats called peak controller all i do to give by basses a side-chained effect, and to fit better with my kicks and percussion etc... is attach the peak controller to the mixer volume of the bass. BOOM works like a charm. another way i found that works wll, was by using Erez's technique from Infected Mushroom and do a side chained effect using a highpass filter (he built a plug-in for basses in Reaktor and it also works like a charm. but its mainly if you have the bass on the kick.) anyways those are my technique

Side chaining a Kbbb bass sure makes it pump more, but, it also makes that illusion of the bass going faster than it really is, disappear. So without that little illusion there dissapearing, you will probably also lose a little of that chaotic and busy feeling.
But in many tracks it still wont sound better without the sidechain on the bass. 3 out of 4 in my well, GOOD tracks. are sidechained a little on the bass. This last one is side chained to the minimal, and it still is good people say, why this one is different is that this bass has more of that running feeling. Especially when none of the notes are just a flat kbbb...
what i'm saying i guess is, its all about what youre going for, pumping basslines or running basslines.
Not all leads are cool being sidechained either as you say, i sidechainen no leads, actually sometimes i experiment with arpeggios only.

I said I like it dirty, not muddy. |

oni, just make the effect of sidechain lighter and you will have best of the two world - running, strong bassline with lowering a bit of volume in the first note. -3-6 db of gain reduction and 10 ms of release work for me

By bouncing I mean, the bass being nicely equalized so that it is rounded like a ball, and bounces neatly between the kicks.
Cheers bro. |

I share the opinion with Oni Katsu regarding bassline and sidechaining,if I understood it right (All other should be sidechained imo )but bassline is a thing..it always loses a bit of runing factor for the pumping effect.... especially on kbbb.No matter how decently you use sidechain it will always take something out...and the effect is different and with decent light sc you even hardly hear tha pumping.Tha pumping then might be even stronger without..
Now producing again with heart psytrance I think of it if its not betta to leave tha bass on its own but for the love of sidechain - sidechain all possilbe out of all other possible so to say Whatcha think? ..gonna upload on demos section a demo of mine for critix soon btw.Im using compressor in logic (sidechain is there),comp in pro tools also the same - mostly those guys ,one for first stage and the second for audio stems and later gonna do frequency selective sc in pt.Ill see how it works with psy.peace
