I'd like to agree about the over use of compression and EQ, but only because I've been there.

For a long time I made a habit of coming up with a synth patch that I thought was good enough and then trying to make it just a little punchier/clearer/crisper/etc through the use of compression or EQing. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. But I did find that I got in the habit of resorting to these 'band-aids' to fix my synth sounds - ON EVERY PATCH.

Eventually I had to admit to myself that if I needed EQ and compression on every synth then my patches weren't good enough. Now one of my personal challenges is to try to avoid EQing and/or compression whenever I can and I find my mixes are much cleaner!

So before I plop on an EQ or a compressor I first ask myself, honestly, "what's wrong with the sound?" A lot of times I'm trying to use an EQ/compressor to make a mediocre patch better and when I think about what is causing the unlikeable parts of a patch I can usually identify how to correct them in the synth.

For instance if I have a nice snarly patch that simply goes too low and gets muddy I'll try and adjust the modulation range of the filter and stop the filter from going that low. If my patch is too dynamic I'll try and address it in the AMP or filter envelope, or maybe increase/decrease any applicable filter saturation/distortion.

This analytical approach of breaking the synth patch sounds in to what I like and what I don't like and then addressing these problems *at the source* has helped me move beyond creating 'good enough' patches and into creating patches that I'm proud of.

Blah blah blah... it comes back to the same old adage: 'less is more.'

peace,

i always use eqium to remove too high and low frequencys. this could be done with the synth filter but i prefer leaving it free for automatation (vanguard has only a filter, which is the synth i mostly use due to my cpu capabilities).
plus compressors help you boost the volume without reaching the 0.0 and make the sound much clear.
this is the basis per channel. oh and don't forget the reverb (except for kick and bassline).

this is my way. i don't care if it's good, bad, profesional, noob, lame... it's MY way

pfff, the easy way out....

hey, ur problem has a simple cause: u need monitors and u need soundproofing. u hear a representation of ur bas thru ur speakers but it's 'colored' sound, u can't hear what it 'really' sounds like, that's why it changes when u move around in ur room, that's also why u haven't been able to program it perfectly, simply because u can't hear it perfectly. When u have monitors and soundproofing u'll have a much better listening environment and u'll be able to program ur bassline much better (not to perfection, cuz only the best studio's in the world have a near perfect bass responce and monitors with the bass extention needed)

also, what rob-ot said is very correct...
"I saw that very good producers, some of whom are well known names, prefer to not put any compression or eq on kick and bass, and instead prefer to get the sound right at the synthesis and sample choice stage. In general this is preferrable for all sounds....with the caveat that all mid to upper sounds need a low-cut/high-pass filter."

thats a stupid way to think IMO.
and realy lead to zero improvment.

anyhow.. try to reduce 30hz with hp filter on the bass.. should do the trick.           www.sattelbattle.com

yes. this should do the trick. spend hours tweaking eq and compression if you like, but thats a wast of time if there is a bunch of muddy shit in the very-low end
