I've been trying to make a goa bassline in FLstudio but feel a little at loss as to what a basic goa bassline pattern should look like. I've tried putting notes on every 16th but it still feels off. |

try not to have a note when the kick drum plays so basically if ur going for a full on bassline it would be like this KBBBKBBBKBBBKBBB
u can experiment with putting some notes an octave higher etc to get a nice groove
the rest is just experimentation!

by lacking something i assume u mean power n drive? u definately need to eq ur bassline to get it sounding nice n punchy...other than that try using waves Rbass and\or waves maxx bass...
good luck..i know how u feel i've been there...it takes time! experiment!

lithium72 - dont think about quality now, please! drop all thoughts on Eq!
so you want a goa baseline? there are tons of them, tons of variations...
but a safe bet would be to make one in a mid eastern scale, to get that exotic and mystic feeling..
try this one and see if you can learn anything..
http://www.surfingpharaoh.com/assets/audio/midi/eastern.mid
import this midi file and listen... you should be able to get some notes out of it that you could experiment with...
it would be cool if somebody could hand some good links to some mideastern midifiles, its a very nice way to learn how to play different scales and get new ideas...

I love variations in everything except basslines. Mid Eastern scales are interesting, but if you want power stick with the kbbbkbbbkbbbkbbb. An occasional octave change is nice, but I think those basslines that are all over the place are cheezy and annoying. |

I've been wondering for a while.. is there a particular reason not to have a bass note on the downbeats, or is it just a stylistic thing? |

Turbo Taima, to answer your question layering the bass note over the kick causes some bad frequencies. I used to do it and my kick rumbled like hell, then Colin OOOD set me straight. Just try it. loop a sequence where you layer the bassnote over the kick for a measure and you don't layer it for a measure. You will hear the difference. Of course if you have a deep bassline you will need a kind of bassy kick to lead into it properly so it matches well. |

Aldus B - to get a true 16th feeling you can´t sometimes do like that...
sometimes there is no substitute for a real rolling 16th bass...
and about the frequency clash, well if you notice a clash then you sort it out? you dont delete notes just cause they clash if you are after a feeling?
Colin gave you a good advice if you want a powerfull bass and kick, but i dont think he meant for you to follow it religiously! sometimes a rolling 16th bass can give a track a very nice feeling that it dont matter that the kick is so present and powerfull..
and you got some good tools at you disposal, compressors with sidechain, or lower the velocity on every beat on the bass... a good thing is to tune the kick a little higher so it sits ontop of the bass or vice verse... but of course it depends on what you are after.
thats my opinion..
its been talked about before, dont go for formulas, go for feelings.... so do not take the kbbbkbbbkbbb for a fact...
but is agree that its good trick and i use it sometimes aswell..

i can agree with you on that, i tend to dislike certain basses aswell.. for some stuff it might work, not just cheezy, but very funky psychedelic...
but i did not mean that he should use a whole scale for the baseline, maybe just some notes from it...
but it was just an idea...

Thanks for the imput New Era Scientist. I have heard that sidechaining works, but honestly I don't really know what that's all about. Maybe you could explain. |

Aldus B, read this, colin did a good job, if you still dont understand i might give it a try.
http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/29974/forum/2/start/15
take this method to test, dont just read it and feel that its too much work, its fun to experiment and force your self to learn..
there are other sidechain compressors aswell..
i will dig up some more guides for you...
also i remember that someone posted a cubase savefile with a premade sidechain...
ill be back.. |
