How would you differentiate between Psychedelic Trance and Techno (Cheezy) Trance basslines??
As per my understanding the general formula for psy trance basslines is :
k-b-b-b/k-b-b-b =(which i never have a problem with btw)=
(k=kick & b=bass)
Whereas for techno trance it is :
k-bb/k-bb
(bb=extended bass note)
or
k-b-b/k-b-b
^^
Now in the immedately above notation, most of the times there is an extended bass note which coincides with the kick (as per my understanding when i listen to it), without which it doesn't sound very appealing.
However when i try to construct a similar techno trance bassline somehow there seems to be no groove or flow. I've spent many hours on it and tried various settings with compression/reverb/altering note size/enhancing thru processors (Scream4 DestructionUnit)/EQ .....Either the kick eats up the bass or the bass completely drowns kick.
Any1 have any enlightening input on this matter??
Appreciate it!!

Have you tried side-chaining?
Row row row your boats gently down the stream; merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream. |

I'm no expert but here it goes :
To keep it simple.......
Music is a construction of a series of "Bars" or Loops!
Each "Bar" contains "4 Notes".
Each "Note" is represented by a letter of the sample played at that Note - "k=Kick" & "b=Bass".
Hence the basic formula for psy bar/loop would be =
Bar1 /Bar2
k-b-b-b/k-b-b-b
etc.... right experts? Am i there yet? Care to elaborate?
Hope i could shed some light on this for you with the matchstick of knowlegde i possess.
I'll try and get a sound sample of what i'm meaning to say in my initial post - but if you listen to Tiesto i'm sure you get the drift!!
About sidechaining: - i've been left dazed reading so many other posts where it has been mentioned and there are quite a few permutations and combinations that can be contructed in my sequencer (Reason3). The thing is, i'm not really clear of the function of sidechaning - as a process, what does it do? - what's actually happening to the sound?
I mostly always have a Main Compressor attached to Primary mixer - Should sidechaining be dome using this? And if so which sample should it be connected to? Or should individual compressors be applied to each sample? And if so in what order should they be connected?? .... so many confusing questions ...
Appreciate the help - Thanx!!

hi,
making ok kik-bassline in a sampler can be relatively easy.
get this, great stuff from fugga, if you did not already have it:
take any sampler (battery, the one in live, guru, --dont know if there are freeware ones- etc.) use 1/16 notes (a division of a bar you can choose like 32, 64 or 2 etc.) ; 16th means 16 notes in a bar.
put a kik on note 1, 5, 9 etc. take bass-sample from vb1 for example af bass d.wav on 2,3,4...6,7,8 play on 144 bpm or so and voila u'll be surprised of 'urself'.
then make some variations with longer loops like 4 bar and one or two other bassamples instead of the first one. play a bit with tune on a sample and u will be even more surprised.
then make up ur mind about how u want ur sampler basslines and make ur own samples with ur favo synth if u like basslines with sampler.
maybe you want to make basskik directly from a synth. it helps u if u did the sampler basslines.
try to get what fugga tells, for me it was really helpfull. |

(Or many others options) .
And who say there is a rules in here ? . imagination , creativity and open mind will send u and show you the right road to them and not any mathematics , doctrine or formula , Let your ears decide . Good heavy bass & kik will do the work at the techno/TechTrance (What ever will be) side and at the same time a different one for the trance one . Thats all . Look and find it in your head and not here or in the university , physics books or any laboratory . The right answer is inside of you . |

The difference is in the sound and timbre of the bassline, not the rhythm..
because what you describe above is commonly used in Progressive psy and Psychill works.. |
