I also think it is important not to overlook amp simulators - I get sounds that i like using ableton's saturator or amp simulator.

yep! me 2! It's one of those things, like a flanger or chorus. Does unique things to the sound! |

sometimes even the garageband amp simulator does exactly what a sound needs. (i wouldn't use it on a psy bass though). |

yep, but don't dismiss it like that... you can get very quadrafuzz like tones with amp simulation if used wisely. possibly in parallel ('cause you don't want to just stack it all inside the amp, so to speak)... |

i like soundtoys ones best personaly..
if you like mutliband ozone (or saturn but i think the crossovers may not be as good) + soundotys ones could be good i guess..i found soundtoys give the depth /weight similar to hardware , while soemthing like fab fitler one can sound 2d
often it s better to use like 3 plugs of sat in the chain and using them more subtely..insteed of juste one that do it all..got closer sound to hardware chain/sound i like that way
i have the one from fxpansion (maul or something like that ) but never really used it much yet but i think it s promising.
also a very little of soneq sat can do wonders sometimes, their other plug simlar to tonelux tilt is good too |

Yeah, Decapitator sounds great. I've used it to add warmth to low end instrument's group sometimes, just to inprint some character in there.
I do like Ozone, but I usually don't use it much while mixing. Although they just made it easier to do just that: since it comes with a full pack of plug-ins if you buy the "Advanced" one. I like the "Exciter" in there very much (think that's what you're talking about, no?). A bit out of topic, but the tape saturation in there ranks way up there for me, perhaps better then the latest from Waves Audio (despite the cool looking interface with the tapes and everything eheh)... Their guitar amps are probably the best I've heard though. And has anyone tested with the new mixer simulations? Another kind of analogue-sounding distortion/saturation in there. These things are meant to sound cool when driven hard into red zone, just like the real thing...
Overall, analogue modeling has come a long way!
I think the crossover on Saturn is fine! At least when you're using the same kind of saturation across all the bands it's fine. It gets weird and messed up if you don't! Never tried to chain multiple instances of it, will see about that soon...

yeah with more than one it can lead to great result..but maybe mroe single band.. pre /post eq comp ect.. when trying to mimic my hardware chain i get close... each gear add something.. the magic come from the whole chain.. with plugs it can add good density thickness to the sound but it consume too much cpu..
for more detailed sound i find it s better when color is subbtle .. and when more is needed a few stage of stubblte colors can be nicer than one stage of the same thing for me.
i often try to get the desired result with a few plugins soemtimes /often it s impossible with one.. |
