Hi guys,
Well, I have a question about bass writing. "Do u or don't u write bass on the kick (I mean, do u put a bass note where there is a kick note...). From 1 point of view, u don't do that since then the kick and the bass can colliedes and it harms the sound, while on the other hand, maybe a good EQ job can make it work and sound good.
What do you think ? |

I usually dont put the kick on the bass. I just dont see why U need to do it. If its a running groove I think the KBBB its good enough. if you want the bass-line on all of the 16th notes then you`ll have to cut the bass more on the frequencies that the kick is mainly on (usually between 100hz to 200hz) or u can use the same bass line but only in the sub-bass or 1 octave higher.

Well, sometimes I like to "colore" the sound of the kick... I mean, to give it a kind of pitch.
And sometimes U just build a bassline that "needs" to be on the kick since otherwhise it sounds different from what you wanted it to be.
The thing is that I know that most of the people don't do it, and I want to know why... |

I never worry about that since u need to EQ the bass and the kick to be in freqs-harmony together without coliding too much....
and also I side chain compressing so i never worry about putting bass+kick... sometimes I need to do it.... specially in Dub tracks.

Usually dont do it, but if you have a short fill where you take the kick out for one or 2 beats then i often add in bass hits where the kik would be to keep it rolling along... |

I found out that the line:
bebb ebbe
sounds real good when u eq alitle bit the bass, so i can say that I do it sometimes.
btw - b = bass , e = empty

my latest line goes like this:
b/k e b b k e b b k e b b k b b b
the bass on the kick is reduce in volume so it won't hurt it, and sounds great

If you mix a band you WANT to have the drummer playing the kickdrum together with the bassman.
If you have the bass on the kick just take care that the kick is more on the shorter side, maybe even (depends your taste) on the harder side.

If u don't even consider of using a bass on the 1, 2, 3, 4 count, then basically u disregard 25% of your groove possibilities... No wonder why trance gets boring with the KBBBKBBBKBBBKBBB.. comon ppl.. this is art.. innovate - make special grooves. The KBBBKBBB.. formula is running since XDream's 'Radio' from 1996-7.. Time to seek for more
And for those complaining on mixing kik with bass - work on your sound making technique instead of taking the easy way out

submind dude, in rock/pop whatever the bass is usually played with the kickdrum but the kick is also higher in pitch and smaller in gain.
b.t.w yuli,I agree with you but, the bass is not the only 1 that "decide" on the groove. you can make special grooves with in KBBB. hihat and snares are "Grando Imnportanto" too..

I've always used both kick and bass at the same beat... and I'll probably keep it that way...

Do you want to say that this is not possible in psytrance? Ups, I didn't know that there is a law of being influenced by music outside psytrance- universe...
