Bass synths don't need to be complicated at all.
It's more about how good parts you use for it IMO.

I build my own bass synth using the modular II on pulsar with flexor modules.
One osc, a couple of tight envelopes and a filter is all there is to it.

Good slide is nice to have as well, which is the only thing I don't get from my current machine.
Just have to program pitch bends instead.

i agree they should be simple but still...
lets say u have the perfect bass machine,
what would u like it to be able to do?

Only one thing really.
Give a fat and punchy sound.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

ultra fast snappy envs, a saw and a sine for a sub. i found a patch for a kurzweil k2000 that has the deepest bass ive ever heard and it uses a highpass filter into a lowpass filter, i soppose to get rid of any rumble from to low of freqs. that would be a nice addition.

some ideas

-ultrafast 2,4, 6 pole filters
-ultrafast convex envelopes
-relatively simple but flexible modulation matrix
-built in sampler with tons of electric basses
-mod matrix capable of controlling balance between sampler and synth
-a lag generator
-complex bass arpeggiator
- of course vst automation control
-many different distortions and overdrives
-an independent adjustable hipass filter
-a very cheesy built in DEMO!

a sawtooth wave that can be switched between octaves (4', 8', 16', 32', 64')

a (very good emulation of) an analogue low/band/high pass filter, which is freely settable between each kind of filter (like the fruity filter, with which u can open lowpass bandpass and highpass at the same time), has a resonance that's capable of producing huge subbass when in self-oscillation (like the filter on my Juno-60), and can be switched between 12db, 18db, 24db and 32db.

a very fast delay-attack-hold-decay-sustain-release envelope (maybe a second one for the amp, but i always gate the amp when making a bass, so i wouldn't need it) (like he fruity envelopes, but faster).

a parametric 3band EQ with a good musical sound (like the nyQuistEq).

and a compressor switchable between VCA-optic-... (like the blockfish), with different kinds of modelled analogue saturation (like the predatohm), switchable from hard to soft knee with a knob instead of a switch (so u have more then just hard or soft, everything in between too, like the vintagewarmer), preferably stereo and multiband, with at least 3 bands that can be set to any frequency between 20Hz and 20kHz. Not forgetting attack, release, threshold and ratio, and a big drive knob (like the vintagewarmer).

that would be my ultimate bassline synth...

Nice, Fregle.

a few more:

-a cabinet emulator like POD
-built in LCD with nonstop amateur porn
-a mini-fridge
-a "brown note" switch
-ability to flip a switch and master tune to A436 for maximum geomagnetic resonance
-my little pony
-built in walkie talkie to god
-built in walkie talkie to satan
-built in compressor with automatic release control capable of overcoming intermodulation distortion
-"fingered bass"
-autochord
-freeware

you should also include radio buttons to switch between GMS, Absolum and other types of bass.           roll a joint or STFU :)
