Bass Level Setting!

I am currently using Creative SoundBlaster 7.1 with Audigy ZS Platinum Professional soundcard with external hub.
I know that these are not considered professional monitors for music production, but currently it's all that i have.
The speakers are set to 2.1 (Left,Right and sub woofer) for making music.
This comes with a volume control pod which has 2 knobs, 1 for volume and 2 for bass level.
Q: What should the bass level be set to while making music? Should it be set at the level which you enjoy listening to your music? Or should it be flat? i.e. no bass boost!!

Definately no bass boost.

If you are making music, and your speakers are increasing the bass, you will put less actual bass in your music to compensate.

Then when you play your tracks on a different system, the bass will be super weak because all the bass lived in your speakers eq/bass boost.

You should be trying to get it as flat as is possible.

I can't afford good monitors either so I know how you feel.

I don't know what to say about using a subwoofer for producing, maybe someone else will have some advice on that.

this depends on room and the speakers. no bass would be the best but my tweaters have no bass at all so i really have to set it. play your favorite track in quality and play with both knobs (big bass will always feel good but also it'll clip at lower volumes. set it to your listening pleasure. also make sure there's not distortion at all).
producing with a subwoofer sucks because you'll have a non-flat bass but if you're used to it (i've been using a 2.1 really cheap soundsystem for years) you'll be able to make some impressive basses (my sub goes down to 50hz which is like monitors).

when mixing make sure you do a/b test frequently and never thrust yourself if you think your music sounds better than your fav artist music ears can be really tricky... specially in bad soundsystems.

Great .. thanx for the reply guys ...
Ur Right Safi've been using the bassboost set to listening pleasure but i've always been lacking in quality of production. Will try these suggestions out!!!

I understand what u say e-motions - that may explain why my bass monitoring is not up to the mark .... i've been having so much troublethat i just ignore the clip monitor, which i will pay more attention to now

Thanx again!!!

Sup Dudes ....

Well i've tried the suggestions here!!

Doesn't seem to be working for me!!

e-motion mentioned having tweeters with no bass - i think mine are the same, never really noticed till i dropped the boost to zero!! The sound is lifeless!!
Just can't feel the music right while i'm making it!!

I feel it is very important to judge the bass correctly if the track has to have any sort of groove!!

And my favourtite artist's track ALWAYS sound better than mine!!

Does anyone know of a graphic equaliser kinda program that you can have running while your playing music on your sequencer which will help you monitor the frequencies being produced?           "... b'om ..."

Yeah, try this spectrum analyzer VST http://www.voxengo.com/files/VoxengoSPAN_18_WinVST_setup.zip it is free, and works well.

I am not 100% sure of how 2.1 speaker systems work, but I am thinking it splits the audio spectrum and sends just lows to the sub, and the rest to the tweeters...

So if you turn off the sub, it is stopping you from hearing many of the low frequencies and that is very bad, but if you turn it on you hear the low frequencies but they are boosted, which is also bad.

This is why I was thinking producing with a 2.1 system would be hard.

If there is any way you can set the speakers to just play in regular stereo mode, maybe try that.

When I said no bass boost above, I didn't mean to bass at all.

bro , without good monitoring , it doeasnt matter how u feel . its wrong.
did you try to paint with glasses made out of plastic ? nopes.
beside that , work with no bass boost will give your tracks most likely huge "hmmmm" or worse "boooo" all under your track. and work with it will make it sound dull on big systems.

there are some cheap monitors that will give you nuch better frequency and stereo image then shitty speakers with bass boost.

check out as well voxengo gliss eq , where you can analize and change at the same time/plug.           www.sattelbattle.com

do this to calibrate your monitors:

http://www.abluesky.com/asp/catalogue/catalogue.asp?linkid=143

you can download the testfiles and you need a sound level meter.

That's wicked, didn't know there's such a test on-line. Do you know if it's correct to calibrate my just 2 monitors using this test or maybe there's some similar test for the stereo pair?
