hello guys. ima newbie darkpsy/dubstep producer from turkey. i have a problem with bass notes. when i write bass notes, my headphone (its a shitty one) lifts them one semitone up. but when i plug it out and listen to the bassline from my macbook's built in speakers, the bass notes seems normal. my headphone does this thing only with bass and subbass notes.
im now in confusion of this: does my basslines are really getting one semitone up because of the sound design, and i can only hear the up note with my headphones? or the basslines are ok as i hear from my laptop speakers but my headphones are messed up?
i have no sound amplifier except these 2. if u can tell me which sounds reasonable i'll be happy: )
i appreciate your help guys |

This is a phenomena that happens after you listen to the same music for a while.
It's pretty much all in your head, so I'd just carry on as normal, but keep in mind the actual key of your track as not to make things sound shit.
When not sure, always check the fundamental frequency on your favourite analyzer. |

interestingly enough he's using Prologue for his bassline.

Even more interesting is that he is not grumpy and complaining at all and that he's playing some pretty fast-paced music. |

what you are experiencing is a common problem with ported speaker and headphone design.
you are also experiencing a known phenomena in human hearing- the bass "sounds" a half-tone up from where it really is. experiment with moving the bass note up until this effect dissappears and notice at what point this effect stops. (to know the limits)
best to get some new headphones or monitors to really feel the notes you are putting in.
for bass i suggest a few free vsts from TAL (vintager and elektro- i dont really like their SH101 clone "bassline" but thats just me maybe)
also the Alpha FREE from Linplug works wonderfully...
prologue is ok but not very phat. but very precise and if you know what you are doing with filter and filter envelope you can make a nice phat bass with a short less-filtered attack.
trilogy is a glorified sampler and i would rather get a real bass guitar and record loops than play with anything from spectrasonics... why not just use spectrasonics psytrancemaker plugin and be done with it. its all in there anyway... wastes of disk space in my opinion er "i have a sample library already thank you" just MNSHO
