I think bass enhancers either 'work' for a certain track or dont...
I have heard great basslines that use them and great ones that dont as well..
my personal opinion is that they make a bassline lose some of its 'clean' and 'round'' feeling
i think the overdrive built into the esm is amazing and triggered at the right frequencies cuz it really warms up a sound much more than maxxbass or rbass...
i prefer not using them at all just good compression eq and a great starting patch ...

some synths really ask for rbassmaxxbass and when they ask you put em.
golden rule: use it slightly, a over-tweaked bass may sound fat but the mix is ruined... always use it really slight so the effect is minimum but does it job.
also always do A/B tests, if possible compare with some reference and always check the volume variation of the bassline channel (you may think it is much better and has much more presence, then you check the volume has just increased 3db, and when you decrease it you found out the bass has just lost it's presence). |

Distortion can certainly enhance ur bass but strangely by adding high frequency content.

i use this a lot kilargghhh
my dream is to try REAL analogue compression
i once plug the exit from my soundcard to a guitar amp distorting and the sound just became so rich
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

the PSP vintage warmer can give u a very good impression of what a real analogue tubecompressor can do with sound. In fact, you would have to buy a very good real analogue compressor to match it's performance... But it all depends... Do u want a tube compressor (lots of saturation, not clean at all), a VCA compressor (standard fare compressor, adds some characteer but can be transparant too) or an optical compressor (ultra clean crisp sound, no muddying or added bass)? All 3 are analogue... Most people who really want an analogue compressor want a tubecompressor because of the character... |

Waves MaxBass and RBass are fun to play with, but note that they don't have a "huge club" preset. You want your sounds to be as true as possible for large systems, because the larger the system, the more exaggerated any inaccuracies and bumps become.
Not to mention a lot of sound engineers and club owners dial their systems in at a smile EQ. And some will use enhancers.
The PoCo Character and the BBE Sonic Maximizer seem like the only two worth using for a tweak. Why? Because they come right out and state that they are using phase correction. Any time you boost bass, you also highlight the timing inaccuracy inherent in shitty filters. Try it, take a kinda sloppy, flappy bassline, and then crank up a RBass at around 40Hz or whatever the fundamental is. It'll get worse. It'll have more bass, but its timing and sense of clarity will seem to get worse.
IMO the best idea is to get synths without shitty filters in the first place, and stay away from both EQ and PoCo/BBE style maximization if possible. Finding synths that don't suck at bassline is hard in VSTi though, I'd go for ES-M, Tau, Vanguard, sometimes Virus, Nord, etc if you have them.
If anything I'd use the maximizer on the kick drum.

I have used Rbass on vb-1 bassline, but got best results with higher freqs around 130hz, but depending on key of track, just listen for resonance.
And I find it sounds much better at low level setting, around -13.5 on my last track just gives a bit extra, but leaves the sound intact.
At moment am looking for good vsti to use for 16th basslines since I am tired of the vb-1 sound, want some bass with more meat to it, and more warmth, less clicking... Have been playing with a Juno 106, but havent been able to get it to be defined, so 16th bassline loses its drive... This is why I want the Studio electronics Se1x.... but must save some cash first...

if u do it with the juno 106, then sample the notes instead of triggering by midi. Psytrance basslines are so tight that even midi is not tight enough, only samples loaded in the sequencers (so not triggered) are tight enough. Also, the juno is very good at deep subby and flabby basses that u can use for DnB or techno or hiphop or ... but psytrance needs too much precision and doesn't need sub... Ur better off with a really digital synth (juno-106 is hybrid, with digital osc and all the rest analogue), like the virus or the nord lead or a waldorf, something like that... And believe me, i tried my juno-60 a lot to make psytrance basses (because i use it for bas in almost every other genre i create music in), and it really isn't that good at it... Best i got out of it is with only the saw on, and then the filter in self-oscillation and the cutoff almost completely down (the the filters self-oscillation creates a meaty sub), with a little envelope on the cutoff and the amp gated... But even like that it needed too much EQ and other processing to be usable... I loved crystal to make bassline, but that's just me... I like the control that synth gives u... Right now i'm working with stomper to make psy basses... it offers even more control then crystal for creating short stabs of bass. U can choose a wave very flexibily, layer waves and filters easily and set the timing of the envelopes in milliseconds, very flexible yet simple to use envelopes too. Very good tool to make kicks too... |
