I usually compress the kick & bass together, with the C1. I tried the RComp, but it's interface is a bit too bizarre for me..

20hz?
Most basses today are 60-100, no?
So you need a really short release time..

Do you guys compress more or less everything in the song, or are there certain sounds that need to be compressed and why? (Excuse my ignorance. I don't know much about mastering).

Ok understood

But why compress every channel? Compression is for removing peaks in the sound basically, and changing it's dynamic range.

Nectarius, i took a view at your recomended compressors, what do you think about soft compressors?do you think they are far from doing a good job?

try Voxengo compressors
they are very close to the hardware ones(if i can say so)
but the truth is that there nothing to compare between hard/soft - monitors

also about every sound compressing - thre is a big question about it but the whole idea is like nectarious said:
you can use soft compressors mostly only for catching loud transients , but hardware compressors enable you more and there is a big difference.
the only comp i found that really can change the sound is the Voxengo's one -try it

i've found the tc compressor can really alter a timbre as well as providing simple peak control.           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/
