Bass Compression - Which Plugin and what rates

There has probably been posts on this already.. But put simply, apart from the sidechaining method, what other rates of compression to people generally use to get a good bass sound...

To be honest, I am using a virus c with what a consider to be a very pure full on bass sound, with quadrafuzz and sidechaining, and the result with a clean kick are pretty good... but maybe its not perfect..

any ideas, quoting plugin and personal rates of compression would be really appreciated...

If you have Quadrafuzz on your bassline then there will probably no longer be any dynamic range in the sound for a compressor to compress! However, depending on the sound you have coming out of the Virus you might want to use a compressor to bring out some of the transients at the beginning of the sound; in this case you'll want an attack over 10ms, a relatively low threshold (say 6-12 dB under the initial level of the bass sound) and as short a release as you can get without adding distortion.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

maybe you should try using something like waves maxxbass and waves x-hum, you can get a cleaner and deeper bass with a nice configuration of those vstīs.

on waves maxxbass try to keep the original bass on 0db and raise the maxxbass a little bit until you get just a sensation that your bass became fatter, donīt raise it too much or you will get something like phase cancelations i guess and your bass sound bad like it was badly produced.

waves x-hum removes with nice precision some frequency ranges with high quality, so sometimes and only sometimes really you can set a nice configuration on this vst to clean you bass up. i have to say that i donīt know and canīt say a nice configuration for this vst because it depends on how your bass is sounding and what it needs.

of course sidechain compression is a nice key to keep kick and bass together and prevent frequencies to be placed on top of each other, so i would say that you should keep using sidechain, but not only sidechain, try to use another compressor on the bass track..

oh, i forgot to say that i use waves c1-comp to compress the bass, but i have to say that i havenīt tried more than 3 types of compressor, i guess because waves c1-comp is working pretty fine with me.

Lately I haven't been using side-chaining - I just make sure my kick doesn't coincide with a bass note.

I do run my bass and kick through a compressor together (Waves Rcomp) to get the kick shaped nicely with the bass. usually I find I have a release time of around 500ms (more or less depending on tempo of the song) and a ratio of 5-8. I do this just to shave down the dynamics of the kick some and bring up the 'meat end' of it. That way it "doofffs" nicely into the bass with some audible bass frequencies.

thanx for the answers guys.. I have also been using the maxbass, but get a little scared are to how well this will sound when its played on a big sound.. problem being the configuration of my monitors, which although they are near zero response, are positioned in a bit of a bass trap (ie in the corner), so i find i have to be fairly lenient with the amount of bass enhancement I put.. though I love the warmth of it I must admit...
I think I will go and try the RCOMP idea and run the final grouped kick n bass through it to see if it gives it more power...

General idea is bass with c1 - quadrafuzz - sidechaining - eq - then group with a clean unprocessed kick with RCOMP...

I am gonna go and try this out....

does anyhone here remember how bad the bass used to sound on old goa tracks compared to today !!!

Thought I would dig this topic back up - have a few questions here myself.

I've been using a fairly similiar insert chain for my bass as described above, except that I like to use the C4 multiband instead of the C1 on my bass. I get pretty good results - but ofcourse, they could be better.

Could someone that uses the C4 on their bass tell me what their attack/release times for the different frequency bands look like ? Slower release for the lower freq's to make it sound warmer ? Slow attack/quick release for higher frequencies to get rid of annoying clicks ?

Thanks.

ok, ok... OKAY !!! First of all use a good sounding compressor, like Sonalksis, Vintage Warmer or Rcomp and put it on the group containing your kick and bass. As a start, use a ratio of about 9:1 with an attack of about 5 ms and a release of 200 ms. Set the treshold to 0 and pull it down until the meter starts bouncing and a reduction of about -6 or -3 dB is acchieved. Set makeup gain until it's the same as bypassed and start playing with the release untill it pumps along just right and kick&bass are sounding like one part. Don't compress too hard, or you will lose the groove altogether.

nice infos here. i have 2 doubts, i use quadrafuzz for bass too it makes it fat... i use values arround between +1 and +2 in each band except for the first two which i normally don't tweak or tweak a lil (or even, especially on the first, sometimes i make it -0.5 or something). do i need a compressor after this or am i screwing the sound with it?
the second one is that when i use maxx bass i usualy remove the original bass and set the maxx bass to 0.0. am i screwing it? it sounds nice in my 30€ 2.1 speakers
