Bass compression and EQ questions

So I really like Sylenth 1, but I barely ever use it for bass because I can't make it sit the way I want it to. The bass freqs of it always seem off, maybe just need more tweaking with EQ or something.

Any tips you can give me on compressing a psy bassline? I normally don't do much, but I feel like it's something I can work on.

I've also tried trilian for a very small amount of time, but I need to go through it more to get to what I'm looking for, what do you guys like in terms of the wave forms on there that are nice?

If you compress the bass, the first that disappears is the low frequences..
So don't compress it is my suggestion.           http://soundcloud.com/hypnotic-ant

Yup I've also put a compressor on a bassline once and the low frequencies disappeared. Was looking for them for days, but couldn't find them.

In terms of the 16th psybass, try a compressor that leaves the transient through, and then compresses the body of it and releases fast enough for the next note.

So as a starting point try an attack of 20ms, a 3.5:1 or 4:1, the fastest attack that will not give any distortion of the low end (and I am not talking harmonic distortion but that nasty distortion you get from compressor's when the release time is relative to the really low frequencies and their period).
Then start lowering the threshold and have a listen to see which point the bass starts punching out nicely, without robbing too much bottom end.
Note length and EQ HPF cut-off are crucial to the amount of sub that will be present in the bassline (or not).

Peace out.

Try using saturation instead/also. I've had luck with using both with sylenth1.

How are you making your bass? With sylenth I do no attack, no decay, full sustain and a bit of release to roll the bass off- like .4-.5 (I also like adding a sine wave 1 oct above the saw, mixed lower). Then adjust the note lengths so they're a bit less than 1/16th. I also do a 24db/oct LP curve at 20-25Hz for nightpsy/dark type of bass.

for nice bass, i been using trillogy and very recently trillion, they sound fat enuff for my ears, i never used compression till now,all i do is goto eq and boost ceratin freq ranges around 30-50 low tonks.and really listening with my ears and having good monitors helps, most important is the kick also must be eq'ed to match and compliment the bass.i been getting good results when the tracks come back from mastering, it sounds nicealtho me and the mastering engg had to work out the right headroom and over an exchange of 2-3 small adjustments and tweeks in the eq, he finally nailed it, so i guess it does work that way also.

maybe you just dont like the sound of the oscillator for bassline , sylenth have some of the cleanest oscillators in plugin but it sound very plastic for psy bassline imo, envelop are great, filters for bassline are good too.. you can get a usable bassline with almost no processing but if you dont like that plastic oscillator sound , it will never do the trick .

Sylenth doesn't really sound plastic to me like other softsynths, say for example tau or alien... i guess that is too subjective. Sylenth's envelopes, filter and distortion are very good for real good psybass, much more than other used synths.

the intresting thing about psytrance bassline compression imo , is to get that feeling it s faster, 145 bpm can feel like 146 or 147 with good pumping , it can really groove more.

if you dont get good result with Dh post try different compressors, some are really better than others , one that is not suited wont enhance the sound much or will make it worst. good ones will help to make your kBBB bassline presice and tight like a submachine gun spray (volume automation is good too)

cool guys thanks.
Tried the compression stuff DH said. Messed with some saturation too.

Gonna try some different compressors now too.

I just tried some tweaking last night and today, and I tried to upload it to soundcloud, but it's stuck 'transcoding' - so i'll post it as soon as i can.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

Typo there... I meant release.

1) You should be banned for making music like this, unless you're taking the piss.
2) The bass sounds fine (could be more upfront though, kick as well), although I am not a fan of so high notes and the actual sound of the bassline.

Peace out.
