Sure the possibilities are incredible but for beginning it's a absolute overflow, keep it simple and start with something simple.

I learned synthesis on a Doepfer modular. Its slightly intimidating at first since you can even get a sound out of the damn thing! But once you understand the basic VCO->VCF->VCA and apply CV and Gate signals, you are set.
The good thing about learning this way is that you can use any subtractive synth later on.

And Reaktor has some very basic ensembles that are good for beginners.

More to the point, all (the good ones anyway) sequencing packages include native subtractive synthesis soft synths. They will do just fine.

Not at all the most fun way to do it, but if you read about modular synthesis and start using the tools, it pays off in the long run. How are you gonna use a fixed path synth if you don't know what it does?

I wouldn't recommend Reaktor as the FIRST synth anyone uses, but once you get all your tweak energy out and you've gone through all the decent sounding presets, find some lessons and figure out what you're actually doing.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Wondering what school you went to. I also learned basic synthesis on a Doepfer. Maybe was the same....

I recommended Reaktor for a very simple reason over the Doepfer, the whole thingy would probably cost him a fortune. But once again, Doepfer RULES!!!
