Cruise control. Keeps the speed constant so you don't need to use your feet.

On a more serious note, for a 16th bassline, I don't tend to use much automation at all apart from maybe volume and perhaps filter. If you've got an idea for automating your bassline and it sounds good, go for it!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

You can tweak the cutoff a little bit to ad a little "groove", but normaly i dont use any automation on the bass, exept for creating some special fx of course but not for its general drive.

Bending the pitch is a good way to break up monotony in a bassline           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Cutoff
Volume - i actually prefer to quantize notes it gives a similar driving feel to it as automation takes a bit of load on the cpu power!

I prefer consistent sound for the majority of my stuff, i usually make a bass and sample it, then add a volume env to keep it from bleedign together. I usually use a Butterworth 8n notch around 500ish hz, wiht a width around 80-110hz, whereever doesnt cause harmonics and preserves the peaks, and sometimes Renoise's distortion           .

lol, true.

the beat should put you into a trance, so the best automation on bass (except for rare fx) is no automation imho.
