You can tweak the cutoff a little bit to ad a little "groove", but normaly i dont use any automation on the bass, exept for creating some special fx of course but not for its general drive.

Volume - i actually prefer to quantize notes it gives a similar driving feel to it as automation takes a bit of load on the cpu power!

I prefer consistent sound for the majority of my stuff, i usually make a bass and sample it, then add a volume env to keep it from bleedign together. I usually use a Butterworth 8n notch around 500ish hz, wiht a width around 80-110hz, whereever doesnt cause harmonics and preserves the peaks, and sometimes Renoise's distortion
