The riddle is this: if our property can be infinitely reproduced and instantaneously distributed all over the planet without cost, without our knowledge, without its even leaving our possession, how can we protect it? How are we going to get paid for the work we do with our minds? And, if we can't get paid, what will assure the continued creation and distribution of such work?

Since we don't have a solution to what is a profoundly new kind of challenge, and are apparently unable to delay the galloping digitization of everything not obstinately physical, we are sailing into the future on a sinking ship.

This vessel, the accumulated canon of copyright and patent law, was developed to convey forms and methods of expression entirely different from the vaporous cargo it is now being asked to carry. It is leaking as much from within as without.

Legal efforts to keep the old boat floating are taking three forms: a frenzy of deck chair rearrangement, stern warnings to the passengers that if she goes down, they will face harsh criminal penalties, and serene, glassy-eyed denial.           do not allow yourself to be programmed

Mescaloid brings something interesting to the table... description and imagery in a forum which is full of perverse conversation, and in many ways I agree with him...

The answer to your riddle is one which is simple yet sometimes hard to catch. The Ying and the Yang, the two forces of the world as in everything, not necessarily good and evil, but take for instance future and past, (as present is hard to grasp conceptually and continuously). In this digitization march forward you pose the problem of sailing away on a sinking ship... If that were the case, then we would all be dead my friend. In this world, there are no ships that sink, they only mutate, transform, and modify. this is the reason why we are alive, because of this innert predisposition to life, not only biologically but also psychologically....

Thus with respect to the music industry I can propose certain premises which may indeed restore to the necessary extent the balance between survival and extinction:

live performance: this is something that can never be replaced and thus expect to see more of it at a higher price

i can safely say that at least 80% if not more of the people in this forum have dl'd/shared mp3's. It is, in fact, a large part of the reason why we are here debating about it.... thus there is no reason to resent it... it will inevitably make the lives of the artists a bit harder, but when in history have you seen life getting easier??

In conclusion I see that perhaps it is better sharing of music for home use be free flowing and unrestricted. Then only the people who have a second job, the people who work twice as hard to make that one track, the people who loves their music twice as much as the person next to them, the people who know they are spending their money as an opportunity cost only to make this music... only they will surface to the consumer and by this, the quality level will hopefully increase..... These people can then go and perform live to make some extra cash and have a blast while doing it!!!!

PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST!!!!

just a short interesting article:

The German electro-rock band Eisbrecher has decided to make a statement for its fans and for music consumers in general and is releasing its new album including a bonus DVD with 2 blank CD-Rs which have the same label as the CD itself. Alexx Wesselsky (singer and head of the group): "We are of the opinion that the music buyers are criminalized enough and have been made responsible for the wretched state in the music industry. We are giving them the chance to make 2 legal copies for private use with 'official blanks'. It can't always be that the end users have to take the blame for something that international corporations have arranged with their artist-burning methods." Eisbrecher's record label ZYX Music is supporting this action and will deliver the first 5000 albums of the group with 2 blanks each.           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

Here in Japan, CDs are 25 dollars a piece. Ideally, I want to support producers. But reallistically, I am suppporting the fucking middle men. I dont like MP3s but I dont have this kind of money and if I want a cd badly and a friend offers to copy, will I turn it down? Of course not, even tho it doesnt make me feel great about it.
Why must there be so many middle men? Can we as consumers have more direct sources for music where artsits can get paid a bit more and consumers can save?
Wait, I guess this is not realistic...

Buy from internet CD shops, they generally offer better prices than that. Some labels might also sell direct on their website (we do, both CDs and MP3, with this last option, 50% of the money you spend goes directly to the artist).

I also think that more artists should open paypal accounts and encourage people to give them whatever amount they think is fair.           Beru

Yes, and the music is produced by immortal angels from alpha centauri who never need to sleep or eat, composing tunes telepathically, manufacturing CDs out of thin air.

Come back to earth dude...
