Can someone clarify something to me?
Is a stereo unbalanced cable and a mono balanced cable the same thing?

To be a knit-pick, they are actually not simply grounded cables, but carry an extra version of the signal that then is used to remove any interference introduced into the signal by phase cancellation.
And actually with balanced cables the cabling itself will distort the signal more than unbalanced ones, and in extremely high-end equipment you sometimes find unbalanced connectors instead of balanced to maintain as clean signal path a possible.
But unless you have an extremely good setup the distortion of the signal that is introduced by the phase cancellation process will be less of a problem than the interference it removes, so the end result and purpose of a balanced cable is indeed to get a less noisy signal.

I say yes its the same.
A stereo jack cable is the same as a balanced jack cable.
And yes they are not grounded.
And the idea with a balanced cable is very smart and very simple.
Are you shure they cary an extraversion of the signal?
I though that the extra just picked up the same noise as the wires carrying the signal and at the input the wire with the noise, picked up on the way, was just invertet and added to the wire with the audio signal. That will remove the noise picked up on way.

AvS is right that you could use a TRS jack cable as either a balanced mono or unbalanced stereo.
Either the tree conductors is for stereo use; ground, right and left...or for balanced; ground, positive phase and negative phase.
I'm quite sure that it carries two versions of the signal...this is what wikipedia says:
Quote:

In telecommunications (or professional audio), a balanced line or balanced signal pair is a transmission line consisting of two conductors each of which carries a signal with respect to some other known reference potential.
The differential wanted signals on each line are always the inverse of one another (differential signaling).[dubious — see talk page], but each wire may have the same common mode signal impressed upon it also from interfering sources. |

Youre right Spindrift. I just read an article about it to.
From the article:
"So the hot and cold lines carry two signals: A desirable audio signal which has an opposite voltage on each line, and unwanted noise which is the same on both lines.
This is where the trick of balanced audio kicks in. At the input stage when the inverted audio signal is re-inverted to make both desirable audio signals the same, the unwanted noise is inverted (i.e. put out of phase). Viola - all the unwanted noise is cancelled out, leaving only the combined original signal."
Very cool. |

A balannced / symmetric / TRS audio cable can be:
(how ever you like to call it)
TRS stands for Tip Ring Sleeve
6,3" <-> 6,3"
6,3" <-> XLR
The Tip of a 6,3" jack is also called "hot" and the sleeve is called "cold"
So basicly you have 3 strands:
Tip == hot == +(positive)
Ring == cold == -(negative)
sleeve == ground == - of the housing wich is also connected to the savety contact of EU-Plugs
In case your Gear has Symmetric outputs (TRS or XLR) you could only connect the Tip and teh Ring to get rid of ground loops.
Good Luck!
