Baffling MIDI Hardware Issue

Hello all Frst I will post the gear I'm using to help with a workaround for this issue.

Ableton Live 8
Virus TI Snow
M-Audio Axiom 25
M-Audio X-Session Pro

The problem that I am having is that any MIDI transmitted on Channels 1-4 route to parameters in the Virus, even if I assign them to other things in MIDI mode. With the Axiom I worked around this by assigning everything to MIDI channels 5-16. However the X-Session transmits everything on Channel 1 which means it tweaks Virus parameters even if I assign to other things (example: Faders to volume faders in Ableton. The fader will be automated as well as a Virus parameter which is not what I want. I just want to automate Ableton parameters without also sending to the Virus, but I still want my Axiom to send to the Virus.)

I need to be able to either change the MIDI channel the X-Session is transmitting on OR disengage the X-Session from transmitting to the Virus automatically. I cannot find any info in the X-Session manual or on M-Audio's site that allows me to do this.

Any suggestions for a workaround so I would be able to use both controllers in a live set?

Okay...so download MIDI Yoke
http://www.midiox.com/myoke.htm

Reroute your X-session to a different MIDI channel or port with MIDI Yoke and use the MIDI yoke input instead of your x-session input in Ableton, that should be a work around at least even if it's not the best solution (it might be though).

The other solution would not allow your Axiom to control the virus but your x-session wouldn't either...

Remove the Virus's Midi Output channels from the list in the preferences (in Ableton), this way nothing will be sent to it.

The virus control plugin is a seperate channel so you shouldn't need the MIDI ins and outs activated in the preferences in Ableton.

This will get your midi to stop being sent...

Thanks for the tip So I assume that this MIDI Yoke protocol is stable enough to rely on in a live performance situation?

Yes, it should be stable; MIDI is not a very processor intesive protocol and MIDI yoke has been around a long time, I've never had any problems with it when using it. Of course the best thing is to just use it at home and make sure everything works well with your system before performing.
