Bad extension when attempting to upload avatar

I checked the FAQ and seached this board for the keywords and was unable to find anything. I'm assuming the bad extension is in reference to the file type.
Are there certain file types that cannot be uploaded? usually in a user CP it will tell you file size dimensions and any formats unavailable to upload.
I could use some clarification it's .gif file so that I could maintain the detail of the image while having a very small size.

We do have some limitations and didn't find time yet to improve the avatar system
In settings you see:
Upload JPG/JPEG file
Up to 7KB and 150 pixels (either the width or height)
So yes, we don't allow GIFs for now as we want to avoid animations.
