Do you guys that layer sounds together fancy putting together a short step-by-step tutorial.
I've tried to layer sounds (snares mainly) for years with NO good results. I nunderstand tuning them together, making sure yo've got one low and one high sound - thats obvious. But the results I get are just hideous.
I've given up that process and I just make sure I pick the best possible sound I can, EQ and mix it in cleanly as possible. I don't like my sounds taking up too many frequencies in the mix, so the idea of a multi layered snare sounds a bit disturbing to me.
Though, I do produce some breaks and a very good producer friend of mine swears by it, I think almost evey sound in his tunes are multiple layers! |

Shpongle is a great example of both the effects of timing changes in music, "layering" drums and also doing what mubali said above.

7/4, thats pretty interesting, i'd like to hear that
i think what you said just nailed it for me... this is the question then: is the kick pulse plus the 2 backbeat pulses of snares too much? you get 2 kind of contrasting pulses then- the kick plus the backbeat rhythm. not contrasting, but separate, but still 4/4, but like a counter-rhythm. I just want to make sure that adding a backbeat to dance isnt breaking some kind of cardinal rule, like cats and water or something.
the thing is it sounds good to me, but I have been told that things that I thought sounded good didnt actually sound that good, or perhaps too twisted to be danceable. my wife is usually giving good advice like this, so I will ask her opinion also
