Avoiding sound spikes when mixing in a new track?

Hi guys,

how do you experienced djs avoid sudden sound spikes when mixing in another track?
I have djm700 mixer, a very good piece of gear but so far have been unable to figure how to avoid the sound spiking when bringing another track in.
I can use the crossfader set on lowering the first track's volume when the moving it over to the second track but that sometimes causes the
sound of the first track to be lowered noticeably before the overall level is restored. Any tips or trick guys?
I can of course trim the second track down until I make a switchover but that can cause me to run out of hands and fingers when mixing some tracks

This of course is no issue when making a mix at home that I will be editing later but what about when you are playing live? Surely this can be controlled somehow?

Good advice. Also, cut the freqs on the incoming track ie as you turn 1 up turn the other one down instead of overloading the freqs

No worries mate, I often mixed the highs and mids first by reducing the old track and boosting the new track and then just make a quick twist with the low end (crossfader is in the middle). Once you have established the beatsync you can use the crossfader no problem. I would actually refrain from using the volume faders as you might have already established the same volume levels when tuning the new track in, easily viewable by the leds on your mixer... try to keep both eq values equal to the middle value of one or a bit higher, meaning if you have eg the mids half way up the other tracks mids are pretty much all the way down... same goes for highs and lows...

As a matter of fact the people who mix with their volume faders are often the ones having SPL spikes...

Also try to use the same bitrate or better even wav files.

one last thing. No matter what other people tell you. Do not ever go into the red. Keep it below zero! The pa guy,, the promoter and ESPECIALLY the people will love you for it!!!
